Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?
You could be my silver spring
Blue-green colors flashin'
I would be your only dream
Your shinin' autumn ocean crashin'
Don't say that she's pretty
And did you say that she loved you?
Baby, I don't want to know
So I'll begin not to love you
Turn around, see me runnin'
I'll say I loved you years ago
Tell myself you never loved me, no
Don't say that she's pretty
And did you say that she loved you?
Baby, I don't want to know
Oh no
And can you tell me was it worth it?
Baby, I don't want to know
Time cast a spell on you, but you won't forget me
I know I could have loved you
But you would not let me
Time cast a spell on you, but you won't forget me
I know I could've loved you, but you would not let me
I'll follow you down 'til the sound of my voice will haunt you
Give me just a chance
You'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you
Was I such a fool?
I'll follow you down til' the sound of my voice will haunt you
Give me just a chance
You'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you
Time cast a spell on you, but you won't forget me
I know I could've loved you, but you would not let me
I'll follow you down 'til the sound of my voice
Blue-green colors flashin'
I would be your only dream
Your shinin' autumn ocean crashin'

This song is def a twin to "Unfair" (a song she has been quoted as saying is about falling in love with someone who is already in a relationship) so it is presumably about the same person. Given the references to buying an apartment and not being able to see her love interest "after tonight," it's most likely that she's moving away and she'll "wait a day to break the bad news" (i.e. notifying him that she's leaving once she's already gone).
And, of course, the fact that she sees in him a fellow "idealist" and "dreamer" (terms commonly given to people with the INFP personality on the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)) portends that she'll always be left wondering if they would've been perfect together.

This is about bronies. They communicate by stomping.
Stevie has stated that she DEFINETELY wrote this about her breakup with bandmate Lindsey Buckingham...she said she wanted this song to haunt him every time he heard it on the radio...as the lyrics say..."i'll follow you down till the sound of my voice will haunt you!"
Awesome song, very intense
There's a real heartbreaker from me, too. A heartbreaker, called Silver Springs. Yeah, that's my, that's my alias on the road, "Miss Silver Spring". [When asked about how the song came about] Just a, uh, a sign in, in Virginia or something that said, you know, next exit Silver Springs and I just thought it was ... yeah, I thought it was wonderful ~ so I just went home and wrote this song about it. ~Stevie Nicks, KOME radio interview with Stevie and Robin, 1976
I wrote Silver Springs uh, about Lindsey. And I ~ we were in Maryland somewhere driving under a freeway sign that said Silver Spring, Maryland. And I loved the name. ...Silver Springs sounded like a pretty fabulous place to me. And uh, 'You could be my silver springs...' that's just a whole symbolic thing of what you could have been to me. ~Stevie Nicks, Classic Albums: Rumours, video 1998
You have to realize that Silver Springs was so genuinely kicked off the record 20 years ago, and I was so genuinely devastated...because I loved the song and it was one of the Rumours songs. So I never thought that Silver Springs would ever be performed on stage, would ever be heard of again so it, like, and my beautiful song just disappeared. So for it to come back around like this has really been, really special to me. ~Stevie Nicks, MTV Interview clip 1997
[On why she wrote Silver Springs and what she wanted to say to Lindsey] 'I'm so angry with you. You will listen to me on the radio for the rest of your life, and it will bug you. I hope it bugs you.' ~Stevie Nicks, Arizona Republic, August 12, 1997
In six weeks of rehearsal, it [performing Silver Springs for the MTV special] was never like that...Only on Friday night did we let it go into something deeper. When we went on Friday, I knew we'd bring it out in case it was the last thing we'd ever do. The other shows were really, really good, but they weren't the show I wanted to leave behind. This show was...I wanted people to stand back and really watch and understand what [the relationship with Lindsey] was." ~Stevie Nicks, Arizona Republic, August 12, 1997
Well, since that performance I have to sing Silver Springs to him almost every day, so Lindsey and I get to do and say things that we wouldn't get to say to each other in real life. It's like a release. Even now, we don't talk much, so when those songs come around and are directly involved with our relationship it's very therapeutic to work that stuff out. This way we get to have closure. ~Stevie Nicks, Miami Herald Nov 6, 1997
I cast a spell on you...you won't forget me. ~Stevie Nicks, alternate lyrics on unreleased demo
I wrote it for Rumours, and fourteen years ago I walked into the studio and the record was basically done. It was at the Record Plant, and Mick said, 'Stevie, I need vou to come outside to the parking lot cause I need to talk to vou for a minute.' And I knew it was reallv serious 'cause Mick never asks you to go out to the parking lot for anything.
So we walked to the huge Record Plant parking lot and he said, 'I'm taking Silver Springs off the record.' And, of course, my first reaction was, 'Why?' And he said, 'There's a lot of reasons, but because basicallv it's just too long. And we think that there's another of vour songs that's better, so that's what we want to do.' Before I started to get upset about Silver Springs, I said, 'What other song?' And he said, 'A song called I Don't Want To Know.' And I said, 'But I don't want that song on this record.' And he said, 'Well, then don't sing it.'
And then I started to scream bloody murder and probablv said every horriblv mean thing that you could possibly say to another human being, and walked back in the studio completely flipped out. I said, 'Well, I'm not gonna sing I Don't Want To Know. I am one-fifth of this band.' And they said. 'Well, if vou don't like it, you can either (a) take a hike or (b) you better go out there and sing I Don't Want To Know or you're only gonna have two songs on the record.' And so, basically, with a gun to my head, I went out and sang I Don't Want To Know. And they put Silver Springs on the back of Go Your Own Way. ~Stevie Nicks, BBC radio interview, 1991
This was Stevie's retailiation to Lindsey's Go your own way
I used to listen to this song all the time a few years ago when I was going through a messy breakup with a boyfriend. I take this song as being about a relationship in which a guy cheats on a girl, and she talks about how she believes that although he is with another person, he will always love her and will never forget her because they had something very special and no one can take that away. The girl is still on speaking terms with her ex and he tells her about his new girlfriend "and did you say she was pretty?... maybe I don't want to know". The girl also believes that no one would love him like she could.
@papillon That's exactly what I get out of this song.
i think this song is about the relationship between Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham...I'm not sure of the exact reason their relationship ended, may have been him cheating on her, but papillon you are definately right about the still being on speaking terms with her ex, she's still in a band with him...she's saying she will always have feelings for him and he will have to take the thought of hurting her to his grave
This is easily my favorite song by fleetwood mac. Which is saying a lot cause i was named after Sara, and my sister was named after Rhiannon. I grew up on Fleetwood Mac, and this song is just so beautiful. It always makes me tear up.
The line 'blue-green colors flashing' is interesting. I think it refers to the sky and the lush landscape that usually surrounds a spring. The surface of water is like a mirror, so these colors would be reflected.
@mojo pin could be blue green colors flashing are Lindsey’s eyes, and shining autumn ocean crashing are Stevie’s eyes.
"Time cast a spell on you But you won't forget me I know I could have loved you But you would not let me."
WOW!!! Words and Music, that's (real) life man! Intense, sad, real.
I loved you, you ended it. I know no one will ever compare to me and when you realize that and you ask for me back, it's too late I'll be moved on. It's an intense song. I love it and it's doesn't matter if it was about cheating, or finding someone new. It's has the basic "you'll regret this more then I" message.
This song has the same type of meaning for me, when THE ex, not just any Ex but THE ex, I ran into her at a social event and she started to tell me about her new partner, about how great he is, well I really connect with the line, "If you say she loves you, baby I don't want to know" of course changing her to him to meet our situation, eh, even now that I have moved on it still holds a special place in my heart and memory.
