So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Every night that goes between
I feel a little less
As you slowly go away from me
This is only another test
Every night you do not come
Your softness fades away
Did I ever really care that much?
Is there anything left to say?
Every hour of fear I spend
My body tries to cry
Living through each empty night
A deadly calm inside
I haven't felt this way I feel
Since many a years ago
But in those years are my lifetime's past
I did not deal with the road
And I did not deal with you I know
Though the love has always been
So I search to find an answer there
So I can truly win
Every hour of fear I spend
My body tries to cry
Living through each empty night
A deadly calm inside
So I try to say good-bye my friend
I'd like to leave you with something more
But never have been a blue calm sea
I have always been a storm
Always been a storm
Ooh, always been a storm
I have always been a storm
We were frail
She said
Every night he will break your heart
I should have known from the first
I'd be the broken hearted
I loved you from the start
Save us
And not all the prayers in the world
Could save us
I feel a little less
As you slowly go away from me
This is only another test
Every night you do not come
Your softness fades away
Did I ever really care that much?
Is there anything left to say?
Every hour of fear I spend
My body tries to cry
Living through each empty night
A deadly calm inside
I haven't felt this way I feel
Since many a years ago
But in those years are my lifetime's past
I did not deal with the road
And I did not deal with you I know
Though the love has always been
So I search to find an answer there
So I can truly win
Every hour of fear I spend
My body tries to cry
Living through each empty night
A deadly calm inside
So I try to say good-bye my friend
I'd like to leave you with something more
But never have been a blue calm sea
I have always been a storm
Always been a storm
Ooh, always been a storm
I have always been a storm
We were frail

Save us
And not all the prayers in the world

Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Yeah tis a bit of a choker. Always rememebr falling asleep to this as a kid. I thought, I'd never fall in love becasue the song felt like pain through and through. The idea of someone being a blue calm sea is magnificant, her comparisons of the natural world and emotion in people are way good.
I believe that the first verse is about a recent break up (Mick) and how she is getting used to them being apart 'Every day you do not come Your softness fades away'
Although shes coming to terms with being apart you can tell by the chorus that she is still hurting and not over it.
The second verse is like she is reminising on a old break up were she felt the same way that she does now (Lindsey) reminising on how the break up ended and how she delt with it badly, 'I did not deal with the road And I did not deal with you I know' though she will always love him 'Though the love has always been'
'So I try to say good-bye my friend Id like to leave you with something more But never ever been a blue calm sea I have always been a storm' Shes tried to be calm in the situation but she can't cause thats just not her maybe she would like to be on good terms with him but she is just to affected by the break up for it to end 'calm' with no hard feelings.
'We were frail' this could be referring to her and mick it was a 'frail' relationship because it was an affair She said "every night he will break your heart" maybe a friend had told her to stay away as they knew it was risky 'I should've known from the first Id be the broken-hearted' broken-hearted as he left her for sara 'But I loved you from the start Not all the prayers in the world could save us' shes always loved him but theres nothing she can do now because hes with sara
"Landslide" was given a meaning and the purpose by Stevie Nicks recently when she was asked about it. It is her millionaire making song which has so many different versions.
"Storms" is different and relatable to anyone who listens to it. We can be all cool and "calm" on the outside but there is this "storm" within us that sometimes takes control. FM bassist John McVie recalled when Stevie angrily and physically questioned Lindsey for leaving the band which he did for a few years, recording as a solo artist. Nicks wanted to keep the band together as much as possible. "Storms" is as much about Nicks and the turmoil she feels much like "Landslide," obviously both painful and personal songs.
"I have always been a storm" I imediately fell in love with this song from the first moment I heard it. It is so unbelievably sad. I can't believe no one has said anything about this song. Then again not many people commented on other songs. Stevie Nicks writes the most touching songs-she brings something to her music that no one can compete with.
her heartache flows through this very song, and through the listener when played. the most beautiful song ever written. it is a song not known to many, not taken in by all, but thats why it is so beautiful, so fragile, almost secret to yourself. this is the song of my life. "save us... and not all the prayers in the world could save us."
I must agree with the aforementioned sentiments. This is unquestionably Fleetwood Mac's saddest song. The lyrics are moving, the tone is so plaintive, and it sticks with you. Few songs are, from start to finish, this much of a downer. Lines like "So I try to say / Goodbye my friend" and "I should have known from the first / I'd be the broken-hearted" are unfortunately all too familiar to many of us. Quality.
i love this song. just reading the lyrics brings tears to my eyes. its amazing and reminds me of an experience i had with love "and not all the prayers in the world could save us".
This is all too familiar to me now... I've been a Fleetwood Mac fan for what seems like forever, but I've only come to truly understand this song now.
It seems to me to be about the end of a relationship and a friendship (presumably, in Stevie Nicks case, Lindsey Buckingham) "As you slowly go away from me/This is only another test"-- the person is drifting away from you, and you're left with memories of what was and what will never be. But you've got to get through it. "So I try to say /Goodbye my friend"-- it can be hard to say goodbye and lose a friendship when the love is lost. And even though you knew you'd get hurt and your heart would end up broken... "I loved you from the start".
I've always thought this song should've closed the album.
I do like "Never Forget" there... it's a little more uplifting. I understand and respect your statement, though. Cheers!
Was this about Lindsey? I'm not so sure. Storms appeared on Tusk, and that was long after they had broken up.
Regardless of the inspiration, it's a beautiful and achingly-sad song.
You're right, it was written for Tusk, at which time she was actually in a relationship with Mick Fleetwood (who then left her dfor her best friend Sara during the recording for the album) so it could be about Mick. I secretly hope that its about Lindsey though :) The lines " I loved you from the start" and "Though the love has always been" seems to indicate a much longer relationship at the start of the fleetwood mac journey- she knew Lindsey while in school and they had a long tumultuous relationship however there were always feelings there, even now. Also the fact she talks about dealing with the road, suggests to me that it is, again, about Lindsey. While on tour for Rumours, Lindsey was dating Carol Ann Harris, something that was incredibly difficult for Stevie to deal with for 24 hours a day!<br /> But who knows, like you say, an absolutely beautiful song!
