Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?
There's a light
A certain kind of light
That never shone on me
I want my life to be lived with you
Lived with you
There's a way everybody say
To do each and every little thing
But what does it bring
If I ain't got you, ain't got?
You don't know what it's like, baby
You don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you
In my brain
I see your face again
I know my frame of mind
You ain't got to be so blind
And I'm blind, so, so, so blind
I'm a man
Can't you see what I am?
I live and I breathe for you
But what good does it do
If I ain't got you, ain't got? Baby
You don't know what it's like, baby
You don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you, oh no, no
You don't know what it's like, baby
You don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you
You don't know what it's like, baby
You don't know what it's like
To love somebody

Techno Ted

Audioslave
Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.
Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
I had no idea Janis Joplin did a version! I'll have to check it out. The bee gee's is definatley my favorite version (I am not a Michael Bolton fan and never will be). This song always made me think of a man pining for a woman that either he can't have or she doesn't notice him. Always made me kind of wish that a guy I really liked was really pining for me, and I didn't know it and somewhow it would turn out that I'd find out and we'd live happily ever after. LOL!
o man i really love this song...he sings with such emotion and feeling Great Song
I agree to pholosop30... It's just a personal song recorded by the best singers in the music story! No one should sing but Bee Gees!!
This song was originally meant to be sung by Otis Redding. Imagine how that song would have been!
Check out the version by James Carr - very soulful
Grossly overused cheap colloquiums!
"You don't know what it's like, baby, to love somebody the way I love you…"
So is he insulting his "baby" by telling (her) that she doesn't know what it's like to love somebody?
Very idiotic.
But good melody. It takes a dumb ear to enjoy it.
You did not understand... He's saying that her don't love him!
@veryken Wow arrogant and condescending much?

You should check out the Flying Burrito Brothers version Gram Parsons singing will break you heart
Saw Barry sing on Later with Jools Holland.
I think he’s saying he loves her so much that no matter how much she loves him back, he loves her more. Great expression of love.
I grew up hating the Bee Gees during their disco period, and later discovered their older music. They may have sucked later in the 70s, but man! could they write some great pop songs before that time.

This song is so good. My favorite version is the Ray Lamontagne and Damien Rice live duet.
