Unintended Lyrics

You could be my unintended
Choice to live my life extended
You could be the one I'll always love
You could be the one who listens
To my deepest inquisitions
You could be the one I'll always love

I'll be there as soon as I can
But I'm busy mending broken
Pieces of the life I had before

First there was the one who challenged
All my dreams and all my balance
She could never be as good as you
You could be my unintended
Choice to live my life extended
You could be the one I'll always love

I'll be there as soon as I can
But I'm busy mending broken
Pieces of the life I had before

I'll be there as soon as I can
But I'm busy mending broken
Pieces of the life I had before

This song is completely about his past love & a break up with a rebound. Although everyone may have their own interpretations(which is fine) and can relate to this song because of past experiences, this song is NOT as straight forward as everyone would like it to be. No song ever is... From an unbiased and thorough review of this song, it's clear he is not over his past love. He keeps saying you COULD be my unintended, to perhaps a new relationship; HOWEVER, never once did he say that she IS. He keeps mentioning his past love throughout this entire song. He is clearly still haunted by his past love, which is why he can't commit to a new love. He keeps saying, COULD, COULD, to the new relationship, but obviously, he CAN'T because he's still hung up over his ex. Which is also a situation we can all relate to. He feels that his new relationship CAN turn out to something beautiful, but could never until he can finally sort out his life after a heartbreak that has obviously affected his life and made him depressed. When you're still depressed/heartbroken over your last break up, you sure as hell can't start a new relationship, and this is what this song is about. He completely, deeply loved his ex, but it didn't work out and it left his heart in shambles. Also, the verse "she could never be as good as you" is a lie, because at first he talks about his past love, a love so intense that made him blinded, something that challenged his dreams &balance.. but then he quickly changed it to saying she could never be as good as you, possibly to also lessen the heartbreak for the rebound. Matthew is a GENIUS! This song is genius. Very well written. I love songs/lyrics that make you think deeply and read in between the lines.

Song Comparison

@beyondblue Like has been said, each has their own interpretation. For me it's positive. I put it in comparison to my own situation. There was one who challenged all my dreams and all my balance, in so far as the relationship turned sour from something that seemed great for many years and in the process it put challenges in the way of my dreams and balance, ie it put my dreams on hold and unbalanced my serenity.

Then there is the girl I'm slowly falling for, similar to me, she was badly hurt and still a bit broken by the...

@beyondblue almost)) it's not for sure that "she could never be as good as you" is a lie. The new one COULD be more beautiful, clever etc. But it only emphasizes that he loves that ex though all her shortcomings

@beyondblue i think the you that he refers is his past lover or his ex. That his ex is could be his unintended love n could be his love of his life. But somehow, she couldnt be his eternal lover.

So, for "she could never be as good as you". She that he refers is his current lover. His current lover never could be as good as his ex lover. Hence, he still cant over from his past love n his ex n he cant love anyone else like he love his ex because for him, his new lover...

It was written for his girlfriend, and I believe it was his way of saying marry me.

In my opinion I think this song is all about irony. The words are directed to matt’s current lover, but he’s completely talking about his past companion. I think in this song he displays so painfully well just how intimately he loved his former lover. I don’t know how his former lover has been separated from him, but from judging by the tone of the song/melody it’s probably through death and it’s this loss he is so eagerly expressing to his current lover, cruel as it is. The entire “you could be” lines are indicative of that, along with the chorus basically saying that his mind is not up to date with his current lover, but caught in the romantic past of his loss. I think this following line is the most powerful out of all the song “First there was the one who challenged all my dreams and all my balance, she could never be as good as you.” This is so cruelly ironic in the sense that in the first part of the sentence, he describes his past lover so intimately, almost as if he’s digressing into a daydream of the past describing a goddess, then snapping back into reality then just throwing in “she could never be as good as you.”….what a lie. The final words “before you” once again just completely douses any kind of hope for his current lover…as he just drags on and on with his falsetto those two words. WHAT A BRILLIANT SONG. MATTHEW BELLAMY is a GENIUS

i absolutely agree! but it's definitely not death, just a bad break up that left him heartbroken. because if it was death, he wouldn't say "she could never be as good as you" to his new relationship. read my take on it! :)

I dont't completely agree with what beyondblue says. Rather than that it as a song about him not getting over his ex, I think it's a song about him being so broken by his last relationship that he doens't know how to enter a new, though he want it so badly. I think the last relationship was a bad one, but it took him a long time to realise that; she challenged his dreams and balance and it took him a long time to relaise that he wasn't happy and that his life could be different, it could be more than this; his life could be extended. But now he has met someone new and he sees her as someone who can save him form his misery and eventually can live a happy and extended life with. The reason he says could is because he is doubtfull if he can manage to let her in, since the last relationship left him in pieces and he has to mend these broken pieces before he can be with the new girl. "I'll be there as soon as I can" He wants to be with the new girl and live happy, but he has to build himself together first, and then he's ready for her.

My Opinion

I think he is singing about being tired of wasting time on women that aren't the one; he's had enough emotional turmoil in his life. "I'll be there as soon as I can but i'm busy mending broken pieces of the life I had before". He's speaking to someone he obviously cares about but as he says; it wasn't intended. Simple as

This song tears me apart everytime I hear it. Musically and vocally speaking, the song is amazingly romantic and beautiful.

Personally, I believe the meaning behind this song is: He realizes he's found 'the one', sombody special in which he wishes to spend his life with. Sometimes people have internal scars which prevent them from devoting themselves and loving somebody until they heal.

I am only an amateur with books, yet, I see some sort of relation to Joseph Conrad's, "Heart of Darkness" with this song. In Heart of Darkness, one of the main character is Mr. Kurtz, a European idealist and very knowledgeable man. He is engaged to a woman he calls his "Intended". In the novel, there lies contrast between Kurtz's Intended and a "black mistress" he presumably has an affair with. Kurtz's black mistress and Intended were two very different women living in different places. However, they shared the same affection despite many obstacles in the way of their love. Drawing from these details, his black mistress may be titled his "Unintended". If carefully thought about, these lyrics specifically explain a PAST relationship, "First there was the one who challenged, All my dreams and all my balance, She could never be as good as you." He may be talking to the "black mistress" in an infatuated tone about how his "Intended" challenged all of his values. Near the end of the story, Kurtz dies due to unfortunate tribulations and his final words are "The horror, the horror." Kurtz's comrade and protagonist, Marlow, sends a message to his "Intended" that Kurtz's final words were her name. He lies to give her some peace of mind from her sorrow.

I also noticed that every stanza is 25 syllables. :) That means it was written in some style of pentameter. Beautifully, and craftily written. Matt Bellamy is a genius. As you may presume, this is one of my favorite songs by Muse. <3

This song is about a man in a relationship. Not a bad one, because he still speaks in a nice way about her.

But she can never be as good as the girl he felt in love with now. The one who could listen to his deepest thoughts.

He asks the girl he loves now to wait. To wait till he has fixed the broken pieces of the life before her. Maybe there are kids. Does he have to know if he can let his current relation work again. But he know it won't work, that the girl he is in love with now is the one he should always love. It's just that he cant just leave the life he had before.
