Serve the Servants Lyrics

Teenage angst has paid off well
Now I'm bored and old
Self-appointed judges judge
More than they have sold

If she floats than she is not
A witch like we had thought
A down payment on another
One at Salem's lot

Serve the servants - oh no
That legendary divorce is such a bore

As my bones grew they did hurt
They hurt really bad
I tried hard to have a father
But instead I had a dad

I just want you to know that I
Don't hate you anymore
There is nothing I could say
That I haven't thought before

Serve the servants - oh no
That legendary divorce is such a bore

this song tackled many of kurt's issuses at the time. the part about judges is for the record label hating the entire theme of in utero, the part about the witch is his anger towards the media's "witch hunt" style of attacks on courtney, the line "that legendary divorce is such a bore" is kurt's annoyance towards the media tracking all of his problems back to his parents divorce and finally the part about his bones and his dad were about his shitty childhood

It's about the press and how they are "serving the servants" and so is he by talking to them. They're self-appointed judges who don't even make music themselves, they go on witchhunts and don't care about the consequences so long as they get paid (down payment). The divorce, the bones growing and all that is just the stupid shit he thinks they wanna hear. He doesn't hate them anymore because he's already thought about anything they could possibly ask so what difference does it make anymore. He considers himself wiser than they are basically.

this song is an autobiographical song about the whole Nirvana experience, the 'witch hunt' on Courtney Love, and a sarcastic response to the emphasis placed on the divorce of Kurt's parents

"Teenage angst has paid off well now im bored and old". In an interview with kurt he said this statement was how he felt about the whole idea of grudge music and how much of a bore it had become . He also said that "In utereo " was less personal than his previous recorded albums , which is only half right . Kurt had become bored and old his whole life , his beliefs , ideas were being overly analysed by the media . Of course francis and courtney became a spectacle and for kurt to have to stand by and watch how everything he helped create and love was becoming everything he would eventually come to loathe . This song is about the power of success over an artist trying to break down old barriers . Inside kurts mind his parents divorce always haunted him , he brings in blunt insight into this but in a less serious way , he was coming to terms with it in this song . While other artists were still belly aching about there own personal lives and kurt was the leader of this sadly , so the barriers could never be brought down so to speak . Serve the servants oh no is very vague in context really , the servants being himself and his family serving the media and want they want , to watch him and his wifes career and marriage fall apart . Kurt couldnt help but relieve the horrors of his past in that aspect , so hes giving in to what the media wants to hear , hes became to bored to fight against it like he use too .

My Interpretation

Bite me, u r ignorant. Kurt wasn't planning that far ahead. And actually, I don't think Kurt killed himself. check out http://www.cobaincase.com it will open your eyes.

In verse 3 Kurt is making amends with his father as he was planning to kill himself soon. See my comments for Heart-Shaped Box on 04-29-2002 @ 02:01pm (not my comment right after that about the cancer quote) and All Apologies on 04-29-2002 @ 02:31PM for more. By the way, what did he ever see in that harpy Courtney?

This song's about how the media has completely invaded his life.

They started making fun of his wife and parents acting like they were "supporting him" when in reality they were just trying to make a buck.

actually, according to Heavier Than Heaven anyways, he wasnt really manic depressive...he did have stomach conditions which drove him to heroin though...but no, he probably wasnt planning on killing himself this early...and I also dont believe he really killed himself...I think it was a cartoon mouse angry that kurt liked the cartoon monkey Chim Chim from speedracer more than he did him....

the first line in this song "teenage angst has paid off well" is referring Nevermind and how the angry and distraut teens bought his music and listend to it. "now im bored and old" is saying that it is all over and there is nothing left. Then kurt goes on to talk about the divorec of his parents. it was very hard for him and how he is making amends with is father and saying that his hatred is in the past, and that he cant say anything or do anything that will change the past. Also how hard his childhood was.that is my opinion on this song
