The way this song speaks to me🥺🥺when I sing it I feel like I relate
There is no end to this
I have seen your face
But I don't recognize all these things
You must have left behind
It's a problem, you know
That's been there all your life
I try to make you see the world without a view
That just turn black and white
At night it gets cold and
You'd dearly like to turn away
The escape that fills
That makes you want to turn on heel
Alone, alone, alone, alone
There is no end to this
I can't turn away
Another picture but the scene
Is still the same
There is no room to move
Or try to look away
Remember, life is strange
The life keeps getting stranger every day
I try so hard but this attitude's
A type that won't subside
No matter what they say
Remember your heart beats you day at night
Your heart beats you day at night
Your heart beats you day at night
Your heart beats you day at night
I have seen your face
But I don't recognize all these things
You must have left behind
It's a problem, you know
That's been there all your life
I try to make you see the world without a view
That just turn black and white
At night it gets cold and
You'd dearly like to turn away
The escape that fills
That makes you want to turn on heel
Alone, alone, alone, alone
There is no end to this
I can't turn away
Another picture but the scene
Is still the same
There is no room to move
Or try to look away
Remember, life is strange
The life keeps getting stranger every day
I try so hard but this attitude's
A type that won't subside
No matter what they say
Remember your heart beats you day at night
Your heart beats you day at night
Your heart beats you day at night
Your heart beats you day at night

The song 'Fortnight' by Taylor Swift and Post Malone tells a story about strong feelings, complicated relationships, and secret wishes. It talks about love, betrayal, and wanting someone who doesn't feel the same. The word 'fortnight' shows short-lived happiness and guilty pleasures, leading to sadness. It shows how messy relationships can be and the results of hiding emotions. “I was supposed to be sent away / But they forgot to come and get me,” she kickstarts the song in the first verse with lines suggesting an admission to a hospital for people with mental illnesses. She goes in the verse admitting her lover is the reason why she is like this. In the chorus, she sings about their time in love and reflects on how he has now settled with someone else. “I took the miracle move-on drug, the effects were temporary / And I love you, it’s ruining my life,” on the second verse she details her struggles to forget about him and the negative effects of her failure. “Thought of callin’ ya, but you won’t pick up / ‘Nother fortnight lost in America,” Post Malone sings in the outro.

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
These lyrics are inexcusably wrong.
* an escape that fails & makes the wounds that time won't heal alone, alone, alone
a mass of harmless attitudes, a type that won't subside. no matter what they say you knew your heart beats you late at night your heart beats you late at night (x3) *
I believe the song is an attempt to reach out to an overly depressed person (perhaps at the point of suicide). The singer knows of the hardships that this person lives with, though loves them too much to live without them, so tries to show them while life is strange & unbearable sometimes, it'd be even more unbearable if that person weren't around.
Most of New Order's first album "Movement" was centered around Ian. Most Critics say they were in a shell-shock period, not knowing where to really go. This songs easily about Ian as well.
I agree, sounds like it's about someone who is depressed/suicidal.
This song makes me feel so weird I almost can't even listen to it. At the same time i love it so much. It's so depressing sounding but at the same time so freaking hip.
To me the song is about someone who you love and either its not working out or they are doing bad. I used to listen to this song sometimes and think of someone I knew who was ruining their life hardcore with drugs, and also my own drug use and life. It about someone you love perishing but how at the same time life is strange for everyone...and this persons problems somehow make your own more real.
the emotion that this song brings to me is unlike any other.
To me this song is obviously about suicide, every line, every note. Here's the correct lyrics:
There is no end to this I have seen your face But I don't recognize all these things You must have left behind It's a problem, you know That's been there all your life I try to make you see the world without you That just turned black and white At night it gets cold and You'd dearly like to turn away An escape that fails Makes the wounds that time won't heal Alone, alone, alone, alone
There is no end to this I can't turn away Another picture but the scene Is still the same There is no room to move Or try to look away Remember life is strange Life keeps getting stranger every day I try so hard this attitude's A type that won't subside No matter what they say and do Your heart beats you late at night Your heart beats you late at night Your heart beats you late at night Your heart beats you late at night
@NewOrderFan Actually, listening again, I think the right line is:<br /> <br /> I can turn away (Not, I can't turn away)(Perhaps the 't' word behind 'can' makes it sound like can't?)<br /> <br /> Also, for anybody who might be sad, that's just one of nature's fun little tricks to get you to want more, more, more of everything so you'll make more, more, more babies. Another trick is selective memory... do you remember all the people you've been with? Probably not. Your brain is not there to make you happy, it's there because your ancestor's brains caused them to make babies. You can, if you choose, be a slave to your instincts and be sad, or, to quote another song, "Don't worry, be happy!"<br /> <br /> Listening to enough New Order should also help.<br /> <br /> I think that even in this sad song there is a buried treasure of hope. The 'wounds that time won't heal' 'alone'.... to me this means that these wounds won't be healed by time alone, however they can be healed by other means, such as self healing, therapy, positive thinking, and so on. It means you have to make an effort to overcome whatever your instincts and circumstances throw at you, but that effort is worth it, every wound can be healed, some not just by time alone, alone, alone, alone.<br /> <br /> Did I mention how much I love New Order?<br /> <br /> p.s. I own the two disc set Substance 1987 by New Order. Disc two, track two is Procession. That's where I got these lyrics.
This is quite possibly the most beauitufl song I've ever heard. To me, it means that the singer is deeply in love with someone and their life but critisises their problems (which could be the reason s/he loves them - the whole "loneliness is lovely" thing). In my experience, I used this song when I was in love with a friend of mine who already had a boyfriend, and I didn't know if I liked what she was doing with her life, and her reasons for being combined to the guy of her choice. I couldn't get the image of them together out of my head ("Another picture but the scene / it's still the same /there is no room to move / or try to look away") and eventually.. yeah.
Hate to say it, but it sounds like it's about Ian Curtis. Perhaps the title is taken from JD's "The Eternal":
"Procession moves on, the shouting is over Praise to the glory of loved ones now gone"
Though the song is dedicated to him, New Order proceeds?
The first verse especially could be about Ian.
Also, the lyric is "Your heart beats you LATE at night". That mix-up is everywhere and makes no sense!
@dy;sphoria: thanks, these words make a lot more sense.
a close friend took his own life, about ten years ago.
he felt nothing could be worse than continuing to live in so much pain. ultimately he made his decision, and wouldn't have let anything stop him. before he did it, he flew to another continent so he wouldn't be within a thousand miles of those who cared about him; he was determined.
finally you get past the usual regrets: feeling you ought to have been able to prevent it somehow, survivor's guilt, anger at being left alone etc.
even so, and despite the passage of time, it changes you irrevocably.
somehow this song is deeply sad and yet comforting.
I believe that this song is about Ian Curtis, his epilepsy, death and funeral
I think some or possibly all of this is about suicide but from the perspective of someone that loves the person. A lover, a friend or parent. Quite possibly an attempt at describing the feelings of the person that finds the body.
To anyone considering taking their life...Stop. Please, at least wait until your parents have died because otherwise you will destroy them. Whether they overtly show their love for you or not, in 99% of cases they do love you more than you realise. I'm not a parent but my cousin hung himself and as sad as i find that, i know his mum blames herself and goes over and over and over what she did/didn't do/say for hours and hours every night.
There is no end to this I can't turn away Another picture but the scene Is still the same There is no room to move Or try to look away
People who don't have depression can't understand it. It isn't their fault though and it doesn't mean they don't care. Tell them how they can help and if they can't, tell them how they can show you that they care about you.
One of the nastiest things about depression, is how it tricks the person into believing they NEED to isolate themselves, when the opposite is true. The deeper the darkness is, the more they need a hand to get out...and the further they will retreat into that dark place. The demons promise them safety and acceptance, away from criticism but give them despair.
If you know someonw with depression, invite them out with you next time. They probably won't come. They might not even reply*. But it will make them feel less isolated. Just 4 words might be enough to save their life..."Fancy a drink sometime".
*If they don't reply, don't take it personally. It most probably just means they can't face anyone but they can't find any way to explain and still sound fairly normal. They won'f want to try to explain what's going on in their head because they fear that if they do, you might not invite them again. Most of their day is spent trying to appear normal or doing things that force them to appear normal. They learn to become fantastic actors because they don't want to be defined by their depression.
Lastly, don't hang yourself. It isn't cool. Whoever finds you will have to endure that image 1000 times a day. Still not convinced? Did you know that death is rarely instant? Most people suffocate and take a few minutes to die. Nearly all of them shit and piss themselves too. Is that how you want to be remembered?
