So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Falling farther with a flaming hand
I knew the question but I lost the answers
I'll hold the wall for all
I'll hold it all for all
As long as no one asks no questions
I got the message and the message stood
One, two, three
I got another, got another
One, two, three
I got another, got another
I got another hit that held me the last time
Don't ya know what I mean boys?
One, two, three
I got another, got another
Falling fast but doing all I can
I know the questions but I lost the answers
I got the message and the message stood
One, two, three
I got another, got another
One, two, three
I got another, got another
I got another hit that held me the last time
Don't ya know what I mean boys?
One, two, three
I got another, got another
Lease the one who makes it
Profit from the riddle
Kill the one that breaks it
Always in the middle
Keep the dream alive
With sleeping pills, you shouldn't fiddle
Lease the one that makes it
Profit from the riddle
I got the message but I lost the race
I got the message but I lost the race
One, two, three
I got another, got another
One, two, three
I got another, got another
I got another hit that held me the last time
Don't ya know what I mean boys?

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

This is about bronies. They communicate by stomping.
Well... Pruno is a term used in prisons for fermented fruit (alcohol) made in plastic bags to get f-ed up on. I think the song is about keeping up a veneer of having your things together while you're really falling apart.
you did that in prison?
thanks dude i had no idea what pruno meant
SUCH AN UNDERRATED SONG...
Yeah I agree emsguared. As well, the line "I got another hit that held me the last time" really reminds me of like a bong hit or some sort of drug hits or a swig from some alcahol, etc. It simply sounds like hes getting fucked up or did.. On something! Haha
what i cant believe this song doesnt have more comments its great! like most STP songs i think it has a double meaning... anyways i jam this almost everyday
double meaning indeed, see my comment above talking about "another" sounding like "the math done" for non-native english speakers, which in turn might be a play on words of "math" sounding like "meth"... The guy is just a GENIUS songwriter
Drugs or no drugs, they'll always be my favorite band, and I will always think Scott is talented, preferably when sober =)
this song is well good! Well to be honest i think every STP song is lol but yeah i love it, really beautiful lyrics, and so catchy too!
i bet this song is really energetic live... i wonder if theyve ever even played this song live
Saw it live in Buenos Aires 2010, almost 2-hours set, talk about "energetic" haha
Oops, my bad, they didn't played Pruno live, they played Heaven and Hot Rods, and I remember thinking at the time "damn, wish they played Pruno which is much better"<br /> youtube.com/watch
this is scott pretty much admitting at the time this was written that he was an addict and probaly wasnt gonna get clean for a while
could have been a single
for real any stp fans need to have this song on their ipod for sure
