Into Dust Lyrics
Breathless and on again
Inside today
Beside me today
Around broken in two
'Till you eyes shed
Into dust
Like two strangers
Turning into dust
'Till my hand shook with the way I fear
Or have something more to gain
I could feel myself growing older
I could feel myself under your fate
Under your fate
I could feel my eyes turning into dust
And two strangers turning into dust
Turning into dust

This song is just...it's beyond words, really, you know? It's just one of those songs that are so rare. It's beautiful and haunting and eery, and all you guys are right about everything you've said to describe it, but really, it's more than that, isn't it? It's more than just haunting beauty? There's a real frailty to it, it's really vulnerable and open. Sometimes I can listen to it and cry, and other times it cheers me up. It's so powerful. And yeah, I know I'm babbling. But my favourite part is the bit about being under someone else's fate. Cause we've all felt that sometime.
@tamzinrose I just heard this last night. I cried too and didn't even know why.

This is a song about a person who has left their loved one, whether it be through death or otherwise. Usually it's the other way around, usually it's the one who has been left that is put into song. Turning into dust means they're starting to 'forget' about each other, they're setting aside the memories, they're starting to move on to different things-different people. They're becoming strangers, they're turning into dust.

I first heard this song on House -- one of my favorite shows. It made the scene it was played in so much sadder than it would have been, and even though the episode was nowhere near a favorite of mine, I found myself crying! It was played in a man's time of dying, though it may be about something less permanent than death. Yes, it could be about death -- we all turn to dust beneath the soil. But it could also be about how people can grow away from each other and disappear from one another's memory. Hence why Hope feels her eyes turning into dust and why she "could possibly be fading." But the death explanation seems more accurate to me. And this will sound superbly weird, but the song sounds as though, in particular, it could be alluding to two people who are dying together and have Alzheimer's disease. So now, they are strangers. They have faded from each other's memories and now will die together, turning into...dust. Farfetched, I know.
I first heard it on House too. In the context it was incredibly moving... a very unpleasant and self-important man was dying and knew he had only hours to live. He had no family or friends only a prestigious career and it was all about to turn to dust, leaving nothing of any real value or importance behind. This song moves me every time I hear it.

I too cried. It was not just how powerful the song was, but the circumstance that made it incredibly overwhelming.

I think "Into Dust" is one of the most beautiful songs that I have ever heard. Everytime I hear it I like it even more. I think it's about losing someone,or feeling as though your life is fading away, going through the process of death, or just dealing with the realization that there's no avoiding this angel of death that awaits us all. Knowing that you never know when you will go, and being unsure about that can make you feel small, it can make you feel colder. If you think too much about death, you might feel as though you are dying, maybe not in the sense of being terminally ill, but we all are living and we all must die eventually. It's sometimes a sad thought to have, its a scary one. This song makes me feel like my life is short, that right now i am turning into dust. Even though its a depressing subject, i think this song makes death beautiful, it unites us all "two starngers turning into dust". Death is around us everyday, inside us, beside us. "I could possibly be fading or have something more to gain" life is uncertain, we might be dead tomorrow or we might gain something.

Ya I know...!
Years later we are listening to possible sound tracks to add to a video game commercial ... and we find this PERFECT song to add. (It worked fabulous with the battleground background.) A seeming hopeless and desperate life and death situation that two log-lost warrior spirits find themselves trapped by.
The song is actually about two humans, whose relationship is being twisted and tortured by others so adamantly, that their desire to share their hope for each other seems ... well ... kind of hopeless.
(But it only seems that way - for IF they hang in there - they can both survive.)
All they have to do is keep the faith - and keep trusting each other - and they will come off conqueror ... and find each other alive ... when others can no longer resist their re-connection in this life and the next.
WOLFFEE
I appreciate the song in it's entirety but what's more is my appreciation for other peoples' analysis of songs. Sharing a passion for music, seeing it here in pure perfect form really makes me feel ...not so alone...? Corny tho it may be.

Moving on, I just wanted to voice my adoration for POWDERSNOWBOY's review or "break down" analysis if you will. Could never have said it better myself and if wishes came true I'd be granted your ability to simplify so much down to literally 5 or 6 sentences (more like a run-on 5 but who cares, lol.)

So Mister...
So Mister Wolffee, if you don't already write as a hobby and/or occupationally... you should give it serious thought because you definitely have a way with words that conveys a passion as well. Thank you for the refreshing read.

I see this song as seeing and feeling yourself die on the inside to where everything you see, like your entire life turns to dust and dies with you. Its you grieving yourself

To me it's about losing yourself in another person, "turning into dust", "I could feel myself under your fate".
Either that or it's about two people destined to be together, turning into dust together, being under the same fate.
Both interpretations are valid.

well, it could be about realizing that you have a decision to make wich will inevitably will take you away from someone you love, choosing between losing either that other person or yourself.

"I could feel my eyes turning into dust And two strangers turning into dust"
here it looks like she is comparing the way that our eyes are made for eachother, a beautiful pair, they see together and without the other you can't see propery. she compares it to how people are destined for eachother. i don't think it's about people dying and feeling fate and fear in that way; but because falling in love is scary and breathtaking and i think she describes that perfectly.
