The dust has finally settled on the field of human clay
Just enough light has shown through
To tell the night from the day
We are incomplete and hollow
For our maker has gone away

Who is to blame?
We'll surely melt in the rain
Say I, say I
Say I, say I
Say I, say I

The stillness is so lifeless with no spirit in your soul
Like children with no vision do exactly what they're told
Being led into the desert
For your strength will surely fade

Who is to blame?
We'll surely melt in the rain
Say I, say I
Say I, say I
Say I, say I, say I, say I, say I

Frantic, faction, focus
The world breathes
And out forms this misconception we call man
But I don't know him
No, I don't know him
Because he lies they lie

Say I, yeah
Say I, yeah
Say I
Say I, say I
Say I, say I

To me this song is about how we are incomplete when God is not with us. We are the Human Clay, and God is the Maker. "We are incomplete and hollow for our maker has gone away." means that when God is not with us, we are incomplete works of art He has yet to finish/complete. By the way, this is an awesome song and one of my favorites of Creed. Brian's bass is sweet and the guitar riff in the verses is really cool sounding.

    Song Meaning

Genesis 6:3 "And the Lord said--my Spirit shall not always strive with man."

Matthew 12:31-32, Jesus says to the Pharisees, "Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come"

I think Creed is playing upon the age to come.

to me, this song is talking about...well i can't exactly explain in one sentence. "The dust has finally settled on the field of human clay. Just enough light has shown through. To tell the night from the day. We are incomplete and hollow. For our maker has gone away." that whole part seems to be talking about how something can control us, shape us, and mold us just like human clay. he calls them our "maker," but then he says "for our maker has gone away," meaning that the maker has deserted us and now we don't know what to do because we are stuck in their own fualts and lies. "Who is to blame?" that's where scott stapp is saying that whoever is to blame left us here and "We'll surely melt in the rain," since we can't handle the blame they have forsaken us with. "Say I," means that whoever is to blame should confess and say "I." i'm not sure, it's hard to explain.

backing up musest theory, i would qoute: "frantic faction focus... the world breathes and out forms this misconception we call man, but i dont know him, no i dont know him becuase he lies, we lie"

My friend and I think its about sin in general; kind of like the Fall and adam and eve's first sin.

It's like... our own free will is tearing us apart because we don't know how to live our lives without the "maker" (ie - God) to guide us.

Lots of the imagery (being led into the desert, for one, the whole idea of human clay, for the other) is biblical also. Another result of Stapp writing bible verses as punishments.

at a concert.........scott stapp said that he wanted the crowed to take a journey......to imagine and visualize the place he was seeing while writing this song....a place totally destroyed......and demolished!and he sits on the cloud and writes this song!......now wot cud be that place!?..........many ppl took this in the way that its a clue to the HIDDEN STUFF in their artwork!but i had a different concept......this may be the land he has destroyed......the land of hid own! the cud be his mind himself......i think this song is much similar to my own prison.......its dealing with religion!hes questioning believes!and he has realized no one is to be blamed for his mistakes and faults...........he will pay for everything he does!......thats wot i think.......
