Goodbye cruel world,
I'm leaving you today
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye

Goodbye, all you people
There's nothing you can say
To make me change my mind
Goodbye

In contexted to the rest of the wall cd this song is when he finally losses his mind and retreats behind his brick wall in his mind he has created over the years to protect himself

The first few entries are hillarious. "Not a suicide" "It's only him giving in"... It is only him giving up and hiding behind a wall... but what do you think suicide is? It isn't somebody just saying "Hey, today's a beautiful day to die, isn't it?" Suicide is somebody "finally giving in (and up)" to dispair. Suicide is hiding behind a wall there's no re-entrance from. I think the closest people were Mahakala and Criticq. If you've seen the movie, you've also seen a few things that WOULD point to it being a suicide note. Remember it doesn't have to be successful to be an attempted suicide. First and most obviously is "Pink" floating face down in pool with blood on the water. And also the fact that his character HAD just given in completely and would have offed himself if the manager hadn't come in and forced him back on stage.

Yeah, yeah suicide is bad and Pink Floyd is good and only true fans would see it's not a suicide note... and all that other b/s. Realistically if you look at the bands reaction to this album and take into account that Waters was pretty much bottomed out then you'd see it probably was a suicide note... But just a note. Some people's morals get in the way before they can finish the act. Also think about the idea that this was one of the most heart-felt albums by Pink Floyd. Roger Waters put his soul into these songs. According to him he was "faced with a decision" and "The Wall was the picture I drew for myself to help me make that choice."

To call ones interpretation "stupid" or classify yourself as "true floyd fans" has got to be the biggest oxymoron this side of "the wall". This website is designed not only to express the lyrical intention of the song author but to hear how others may relate it to his/her own journey through life. Because so many are "dead" set on getting it right i will add that this song is about the metaphorical and not the physical act of suicide. As you read the lyrics you cannot help but think it may have been the authors intent to draw a parallel between a catatonic state and suicide. What is incongruous to me is having so many people post how "stupid" it is to concider this song to be about suicide when it has not been conciderd in any post. Maybe by posting "stupid" and "true fan" before any mention of a misinterpretation you are telling us that at some point you were corrected. Be that as it may i do not think it stupid to concider this song about suicide as it does play an important part in the depth of the song.

I have always interpreted this as being pinks giving up, giving in, and becoming what he hates most. A fascist. Pink could not be around for that so pink is gone (dead, crazy, or locked behind the wall) and in comes the new character I'll call him Mr. Floyd If you will. Death and rebirth. A common thread.

Yeah, it is annoying when it's considered a suicide song. It even made the list of top 100 songs to kill yourself to.

It may not be a suicide song, but surely the title and the lyrics convey sharp overtones of suicide. It may not be a literal suicide but it's as if he's killing off an aspect of himself.

Its true it would be easily mistaken for him wtriting a sucide note.... but hes infact not strong enough to tear down the wall his childhood brought on him.... his inner morals take him over in the end!
