If you gave me just a coin for every time we say goodbye
Well I'd be rich beyond my dreams, I'm sorry for my weary life
I know I'm not perfect but I can smile
And I hope that you see this heart behind my tired eyes

If you tell me that I can't, I will, I will, I'll try all night
And if I say I'm coming home, I'll probably be out all night
I know I can be afraid but I'm alive
And I hope that you trust this heart behind my tired eyes

'Cause I'm no angel, but please don't think that I won't try and try
I'm no angel, but does that mean that I can't live my life
I'm no angel, but please don't think that I can't cry oh
I'm no angel, but does that mean that I won't fly

I know I'm not around each night
And I know I always think I'm right
And I can believe that you might look around

'Cause I'm no angel, but please don't think that I won't try and try
I'm no angel, but does that mean that I can't live my life
I'm no angel, but please don't think that I can't cry oh
I'm no angel, but does that mean that I won't fly.

i think she just sumone who realises that perfection doesn't exist, but knows that effort is more important than the result.

In this song, Dido is trying to convey the feeling of messing up something beyond reason. How she isn't perfect (no one is) and isn't going to be chained.

Personally, I can relate to this song, because I messed up in my current relationship. And he loves me more than anything, and I messed up and now he doesn't believe when I tell him I love him.

When she says "And I hope that you see this heart behind my tired eyes," it could have a number of meanings. Is she physically tired? Emotionally tired of the relationship? Emotionally tired of her self? Or maybe all three?

Have you ever messed up and wished you could take it back, wish you could make it better, but just don't know how?

I love this song because I can totally relate it it. Especially the first two lines because I am always throwing hissy fits and trying to end my relationship and then I realize I really want to be with him. In so many words, I've told him those lines a million times (I'm sorry I'm a mess). To me this song is telling her man that she is sometimes difficult and a pain, but she is human and she hopes he will still love her. I absolutely love this song and I know a lot of people can relate to it because we all mess up sometimes.

Maybe she's used to getting what she wants, maybe she's used to more attention, from more than one interested individual. She knows she doesn't need this one person to fawn over her, because she has others. At the same time however, even though she's tried to leave many times ... she realizes she cares more for him/her, and she's really not ready yet to leave it completely behind. "m no angel, but please don't think I won't try and try" --> She knows she's not perfect, never was, and probably never will be but she'll continue to strive to be better, she'll try her hardest to gain the other person's trust back. "I'm no angel, but please don't think that I can't cry," --> And I think this means that although she knows she's not perfect, she f*cks up, she is still regretful about having done that which pains the person, and it hurts her too. She's vulnerable, and probably just confused in the end.

wow...must say in my top 3 songs. anyways, here goes my interpretation:

she lives a bit of a messy, untied life. she is very strong-willed yet is in a relationship. she needs to be herself which isn't perfect nor is it best for a relationship.

basically, she is saying "babe, don't worry. i know i am a mess, but never forget how much i love you, and i would never do anything to harm that love"

    :)

It's about trust in a relationship. Sometimes you commit mistakes but you try hard to comfort your love one and tell him/her: "Ok, I'm no angel but I will try and try".

You can see clearly that having a lover that doesn't trust you is exhausting here: "And I hope that you trust this heart behind my tired eyes"

    It's wonderful.

Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's.

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

The Night We Met

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
