Morning Bell/Amnesiac Lyrics
The morning bell
Light another candle
Release me
Release me
A bump on the head
Howling down the chimney
Release me
Release me
Yeah
Release me
Where'd you park the car?
Clothes are all over the furniture
And I might as well
I might as well
Sleepy jack the fire drill
Around, around, around, around, around
Cut the kids in half
Cut the kids in half
Release me

cut the kids in half. i agree with the divorce theory. you can have the furniture, but let's split the kids in half.
this could be like sharing the kids, splitting them apart from one another, or just cutting them emotionally - between choosing which parent to stay with, or just cutting their hearts in half. divorce really seperates - cuts - a family apart.
so much is really said with only 'cut the kids in half'
but at first listen it just sounds creeeeeeeepy

At first look, it seems to be about amnesia walking the boundary lines of paranoia but if you look deeper, it seems to be about divorce. When the morning bell goes off and you turn the lights on and you want out of marriage. She can keep the furniture and the pain you give to her too. "Coming down the chimney" talking about Santa which really means she can keep the lies you fed her and the kids can too. Where'd you park the car? Clothes being packed after being laid on the furniture so you might as well just leave already. The fire drill going around and around because divorce can feel unsettling and you don't care if it divides your kids between two parents because you just want out. To be released.
It seems like you haven't ever listened to Kid A or Amnesiac, ever. Tell me, are they about relationships?

i like that version. it sounds a bit as if they were playin this song in a church. quite intense, nervous, but wonderful.

i am confused, i sadly dont have kid a, is it that different?
Yes yes yes yes yes yes times a billion.

This version I think is rather good by itself, and gets criticised a bit too much.

But when you hear the original you'll understand why. It's just that much better.

This version is just odd, and sounds a bit demented to me. The Kid A version has a stronger drive, yet is much more beautiful.

morning bell/amnesiac is like a ball of lint out of the pocket (the original morning bell) snaphappy - get kid a. right now. (a year after you put this entry..)

I prefer this version... it's more melodic and intense which I feel suits the lyrics better.

For some reason, I like this version better as well. Something about the phrase "Morning Bell" sounds like being peacefully roused from a good sleep (ie, the realization the protaganist wants out after unconscious stagnation in a bad marriage). I mildly dislike the drums in the Kid A version, as it supplants my vision of a quiet spring morning waking.
It means something completely different when you don't consider the lyrics, and is one of the few Radiohead songs to which this words =/= music holds true.

They should have released this version as a Christmas song - has a christmassy feel - bells, "coming down the chimney", a feel to it that is dark and unsettling while springy and upbeat, like winter - well, it'd be different anyway. :p
I like this version although Kid A Morning Bell edges it, as it's more subtle and feels more mournful, plus it has more of a soul to it, if you know what I mean. :S

Bought Amnesiac today. Had Kid A for 5 years already. This is one of the tracks I really looked forward to hearing as I love the Kid A version. Every now and then I sit down listen to the Kid A version and then turn it off. I don't really know why. I'm an album person not a single song person. I don't do that with any other song. Anyhoo I just listened to both the versions one after the other. It's just as good as the other version although yes the drum on Kid A kinda spoils it. I like the way it just goes straight into the vocals on this version. Of course this is me writing on the day I bought the CD and after 2 months I'll love it even more.
Question: Why on some websites does it say it's called Amnesiac/Morning Bell when it's Morning Bell/Amnesiac? It's on the box. Same question about Pulk/Pull which is not Pull/Pulk.

BTW this song is lovely to play acousticly. Go to www.treefingers.com to find a brilliant copy of the tab.
