Baby when I saw you turning at the end of the street
I knew a time was gone and it took me like ages
Just to understand that I was afraid to be a simple guy
I tried my best to smile but deep inside my heart
I felt it was shouting like a crowd dancing
I guess I couldn't live without the things that made my life what it is
Can't you hear it calling oh yeah
Everybody's dancin' oh yeah
Tonight everything is over
I feel too young
I can't lie on my bed without thinking I was wrong
But when this feeling calls this world becomes another
Nighttime won't hold me in your arms again
I got a very good friend who says he can't believe the love I give
Is not enough to end your fears
I guess I couldn't live without the things that made my life what it is
Can't you hear it calling oh yeah
Everybody's shakin' oh yeah
Tonight everything is over
I feel too young
Oh rainfalls and hard times coming they won't leave me tonight
I wish I knew what I was doing
Just do let this spirit survive
Everybody's dancing oh yeah
I guess I couldn't live without the things that made my life what it is
Can't you hear it calling oh yeah
Everybody's dancing oh yeah
Tonight everything is over
I feel too young
I knew a time was gone and it took me like ages
Just to understand that I was afraid to be a simple guy
I tried my best to smile but deep inside my heart
I felt it was shouting like a crowd dancing
I guess I couldn't live without the things that made my life what it is

Is not enough to end your fears
I guess I couldn't live without the things that made my life what it is

I think its about a guy dating this girl. I think he rushed into the relationship too quickly, not really getting to know her and not with the right motives.
Perhaps he was just dating just because he wanted someone in his life and no other reason. Or perhaps he was trying to fill a void or escape something that he had to take care of. I think he was burned out from something; work, school, etc.
"But when this feeling calls this world becomes another Nighttime won't hold me in your arms again"
One day, maybe months later, he snaps back to reality realizing that she and him are not compatible. He doesn't quite know how to tell her, but he's thinking about things while he's out having fun one night with friends. He realizes what he needs to do in his life now, he needs to get back to the things that matter and he realizes that she is not compatible with that.
"Can't you hear me calling oh yeah Everybody's dancing Tonight everything is over I feel too young"
He looks into himself and realizes he's too young to really find someone. He's still growing as a person with his future uncertain.
"Oh rainfalls and hard times coming they won't leave me tonight I wish I knew what I was doing Just do let this spirit survive"
Regarding his future: he knows theres going to be good and bad times. He knows when he was in his mindset during his burnout, it wasn't very rational. But even so, he knows that other side is part of him. He wants to balance his rational side with the romantic side. Romantic not in the sense of love, but the emotional and genuine aspects of his inner-self.
this song has actually apperard in the movie Lost In Translation. on a dance scene. brilliant 80's soft rock, with warm moogs & strings. this is how modern dance music should sound like.
yeah i just watched 'Lost in Translation' and enjoyed this song.. the beginning is the shining moment "Baby when i saw you turning at the end of the street"
This song is amazing, I have loved Phoenix since.
The best part of the song is
"I got a very good friend who says He cant believe the love I give is not enough To end your fears I guess I couldnt live without things That make my life what it is"
Awesome French band. I believe this was a big hit over seas, in the summer of 2000. It also appeared in the movie "Shallow Hal". Unfortunately it did not make it to the soundtrack. Great song to dance to.
I love this song. It represents a relationship I have with this guy and it could as well be a duet in my opinion. The lyrics aren't that bad either. Sure, I've seen better but I've seen worse too. This song has so much feeling.
This is my theme song:) I love it so, so much.
This is what I gather. The night did not proceed as he wanted it to, he wanted one thing and she wanted another. Their moods simply did not match. She was leaving and he was calling to her that everybody is dancing. He thinks to himself that he is too young. This will be the last night that they go out together, his friend says the love he gives is insufficient in addition to his emotion. But he says "I guess I couldn't live without the things that made my life what it is." The relationship is not for him.
I think Mars is singing "Can't you hear it calling".
Definitely one of the best songs the band has ever written!
Possibly one of their best songs, in my opinion. I love the feeling I get when listening to this song, it makes me feel like dancing wherever I am, so upbeat and catchy!
It is upbeat and catchy. It's ironic that I just stumbled on this via Youtube the other day. I was unfamiliar w/ the band. The song's about someone who thinks that if they are with one person in a relationship s/he has to give up feeling happy; having fun; feeling young; experiencing life to the fullest; etc. It's obvious about someone who knows little about life. Some of the most fun, exciting, free people I've met are far past the teenage years and know how to have fun wherever they are or whomever they are with. Life doesn't all of a sudden become boring due to age or committment; you have to choose to allow it to become that way.
