I make you a prayer, a heavenly surrender
To the one somewhere out there
The one who can mend her
I pray for the one who can open my door
Let me go through
Oh yes, give me more
A prayer for the lover, the willing intender
To break down the door
A heavenly surrender

I only make love to Jesus
I only fuck God
I only make love to Jesus
I only fuck God

I crave your violence, act it upon me
Set me free by your weighted autonomy
I am so human, so small, so debased
Jealously and darkness rule over this place
A prayer for the lover, a willing intender
To break down the girl
A heavenly surrender

I only make love to Jesus
I only fuck God
I only make love to Jesus
I only fuck God

I'm a lover of freedom but I cling to the dust
I'm blown by the wind, I'm a slave, I am lust
Rub my face in the shit that I sleep in
Tie me and bind me up for your keeping
I make you a prayer, a heavenly surrender
To the one somewhere out there
The one who can mend her

I only make love to Jesus
I only fuck God
I only make love to Jesus
I only fuck God
I only make love to Jesus
I only fuck God
I only fuck God
I only fuck God

what a beautiful song. I believe this is about feeling trapped, and praying for someone completely free, a future lover perhaps, (symbolised as god or jesus) to one day open all doors and set her free too - she wants to use them as a medium to do so.

"Set me free by your weighted autonomy, I am so human so small so debased..." - just a statistic, like everyone else in the world.

She uses others' independence to free herself and I think that Katie jane uses symbols such as God and Jesus as an example of higher beings, completely unconfined by the laws and ways of society ("Jealously and darkness rule over this place") - which are portrayed as dark and melicious in the lyrics.

Im a bit confused by the fucking god and making love to jesus bit.....but i thiiink it's something like saying that making love to jesus is a much gentler, softer way of saying that she wants someone she can relate to, (i.e human) to bond and have an emotional connection with. By only fucking god she wants someone completely untouchable, unreachable and unfathomable (mindblowing?) to quench her basic human needs. perhaps it's also a double meaning by saying "fuck everything". Hmm. ponder.

Katie Jane Garside is probably the closest person I can think of to describe a completely etheral, magical being. sigh

I feel like this song is a bit about masochism, but also about loneliness, ie the 'surrender' to realising that she can't identify other people in the same way that they do among each other.

I think she's rejecting the human in favour of her ideal (abstract or otherwise) that will allow her to be all the things she desires, but that will never happen because she 'only makes love to Jesus' - she will only freely give in to someone that is more powerful than she could be.

Queen Adreena is amazing. This song is perfection.

This is my favourite song, not just by Queen Adreena but that I've ever heard.

i agree with charlietc, that its about masochism. but not so much about loneliness as that loneliness is riddled through it. because its the baring of katies soul and katie at the time was obviously lonely/isolated, not able to identify with others in the same way they do each other, so it leaked its way in. in my opinion it describes her version of a fairytale prince come to rescue her("A prayer for the lover, the willing intender"), a man larger-then-life like god or jesus("i only make love to jesus, i only fuck a god"), stronger then her. who will force her to face "the shit that i sleep in", heal her("the one who can mend her"), break her ("To break down the girl a heavenly surrender") and release her ("I pray for the one who can open my door Let me go through it Oh yes give me more"). in other words she wants a life-changing lover who will break her in through violence and sex, and deliver her some kind of judgement/punishment("Set me free by your weighted autonomy") and she'll give in cause its her "heavenly surrender" and it frees her, it mends her in a way.

    My Interpretation

Amazing song. It seems crass on the surface, but I think the lyrics evoke a sexual metaphor in place of death, or becoming one with that which binds us all--God, the universe, the energy that runs through us all. It feels like she is making a statement that she will settle for nothing less than absolute oneness, wholeness with the metaphysical, separate from the body.

"I am so human so small so debased, jealously and darkness rule over this place" is clearly about the failures and imperfections of life on earth, if one believes in original sin. It's ultimately about wanting to be one with the divine, and she uses sex as a rather twisted metaphor, since sex is one of the few transcendent experiences we can have as humans.

Techno Ted
Audioslave
Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
