Lonesome Day

This is about a guy going through a very tough time, and he knows that it's gonna pass, at least he prays that. But right now, he's stuck in this funk. It relates to a breakup or even a death. He just needs a little time to get through this time.

i think its about a guy who just broke up with a girl (possibly got dumped by her)because there was something about her that he didnt know, like a different side of her. and he is saying that he is lonesome, but he knows he can get through it. he is saying that she bettter know what she is doing before she does it, because it is something she might regret

This album is about 9/11....so I guess that would mean this song is about someone effected by 9/11 or 9/11 itself.

This song is from The Rising, but may not necessarily apply to Sept. 11th. There are some things that might be construed that way, and could be applied appropriately.

"House is on fire, vipers in the grass"

Excellent link to that, but not the only interpretation. Could well be a reference to, as stated, a bitter break-up.

"A little revenge and this too shall pass"

The overwhelming desire for vengeance on behalf of Americans, and in particular, New York area people, could easily refer to this. That said, in a bitter breakup, how often do you want some sort of revenge or payback to befall your scorned lover?

"Better ask questions before you shoot Deceit and betrayal's bitter fruit It's hard to swallow, come time to pay That taste on your tongue don't easily slip away"

Great reference to our quest for revenge following that which allowed Bush's push into Iraq. Especially for those who blindly followed and still do follow Bush and his enablers, there is bitter truth in these words, especially for those who believe in a God.

As to a relationship, it could be his advice both to himself and to his love lost.

The repeated affirmation of "It's alright" is him letting it go and knowing that he'll be the better for it. It's advice we could all use.

This song starts out sounding like it's about a girl, but by the end you see it's about America...each verse takes that a little further. Remember The Rising was strong on September 11 themes, and even though some are not directly referencing that day, this is track one to the record, so it's safe to say it's gonna set the framework for the rest.

In the first he's implying that something made him realize what he/we take for granted.

In the second he's talking about danger at home or in the country and the impulse to strike back.

The third verse is a direct warning about waging war.

it's pretty clear that Lonesome day is about the changes the US went through after 9/11. It's all stated in the first line "Once I thought I knew Everything I needed to know about you"

After all it's still a song with positive influences, as he says, it's alright

I think this song is about the initial reaction after 9/11, and a call for calm. Especially when he says "Hell's brewin', dark sun's on the rise This storm'll blow through by and by House is on fire, viper's in the grass" and "Better ask questions before you shoot Deceit and betrayal's bitter fruit It's hard to swallow, come time to pay That taste on your tongue don't easily slip away"

To me it all seems like he is telling everyone there was a need to consider what we had been doing wrong to cause something like this (not that it can ever be justified), and not to follow knee jerck reactions.

considering he wrote this at a time when most of the country was searching for an "eye for an eye" with no regard to the consequences of their actions, this was extremely prophetic looking back 8 years down the road

Quite frankly, one of the saddest songs I have ever heard. I think the repeating of "it's alright" is a way to soothe himself. We have all done that to help ourselves.
