It's a fairytale so tragic
There's no prince to break the spell
I don't believe in the magic
But for you I will, yeah for you I will
If I'm a fool, I'll be a fool
Darlin' for you

I'm countin' on a miracle
Baby I'm countin' on a miracle
Darlin' I'm countin' on miracle
To come through

There ain't no storybook story
There's no never-ending song
Our happily ever after darlin'
Forever come and gone, yeah I'm movin' on
If I'm gonna believe, I'll put my faith
Darlin' in you

Well I'm countin' on a miracle (countin' on a miracle)
Baby I'm countin' on a miracle (countin' on a miracle)
Darlin' I'm countin' on a miracle to come through

Sleeping beauty awakes from her dream
With her lover's kiss on her lips
Your kiss was taken from me
Now all I have is this

Your kiss, your kiss, your touch, your touch
Your heart, your heart, your strength, your strength
Your hope, your hope, your faith, your faith
Your face, your face, your love, your love
Your dream, your dream, your life, your life

I'm runnin' through the forest
With the wolf at my heels
My king is lost at midnight
When the tower bells peal
We've got no fairytale ending
In God's hands our fate is complete
Your heaven's here in my heart
Our love's this dust beneath my feet
Just this dust beneath my feet
If I'm gonna live
I'll lift my life
Darlin' to you

Well I'm countin' on a miracle (countin' on a miracle)
Baby I'm countin' on a miracle (countin' on a miracle)
Darlin' I'm countin' on a miracle to come through

Well I'm countin' on a miracle (countin' on a miracle)
Baby I'm countin' on a miracle (countin' on a miracle)
Darlin' I'm countin' on a miracle to come through

Well I'm countin' on a miracle (countin' on a miracle)
Baby I'm countin' on a miracle (countin' on a miracle)
Darlin' I'm countin' on a miracle to come through

Well I'm countin' on a miracle (countin' on a miracle)

"If I'm gonna live, I'll lift my life, darlin' to you."

This song has a deep meaning to me after my best friend died suddenly from a heart attack at 31 last year. (No drugs, in case anyone was wondering, most likely congenital.)

Every bit of me ached and begged for it not to be true when I found out, and no amount of wishing or praying could change it. For a long time, I was very depressed - she was my "Bobby Jean" - and I almost chose to follow her where she went. After a while, though, I realized that there was a legacy she'd left behind, and I had a duty to step up and take her place.

I give my life over to fulfill some of the work she left behind, and to accomplish the things we talked about. It gives me a sense of purpose that I lacked after she was gone.

This songs about being stuck, "fairytale so tragic " and being unable to escape, "no prince to break the spell". The chance has "Forever come and gone", and now he's "countin' on a miracle". We don't know what in particular he is talking about, the songs significance relies on the idividual to interpret its deeper meaning and relevence.

For me, i haven't pinpointed its relevence to me, but lines such as "There ain't no storybook story" and "There's no never-ending song" remind me of how things may not be the way i want them to be, but wht i have cannot go on forever.

I love the acoustic version of this song from the "Essential Springsteen" compilation

my idea is that it talks about someone needing help, possibly divine, to accomplish something.

I think this song is written from the perspective of someone who lost a loved one, perhaps in the World Trade Center. Not knowing whether or not they're alive and they're praying for intervention of some kind. And then they find out that they're dead ... "There's no fairy tale ending.." and "Sleeping Beauty awakes from her dream with a kiss from her lovers lips" well this woman doesn't that because the loved one died. And all that remains are memories.

i have the same meaning NGwarfare. It's about losing a loved one, and first don't believe she is really gone. I love especially the last lines where he on her funeral takes farewell of his love with this lines: Your heaven's here in my heart Our love's this dust beneath my feet Just this dust beneath my feet If I'm gonna live I'll lift my life Darlin' to you

    My Opinion

In dire times millions of people call out to their God for a miracle, but are seldom given the relief they pray for. Look at Afghanistan, OH My God! Counting on a Miracle is a last chance option, not plan A or B. Sometimes it's all you can do, God help us! But what a great song, that too often applies to us all. Help out where you can, and Keep on Counting!

Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.

Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
