So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
I've got a surprise especially for you
Something that both of us have always wanted to do
We've waited so long, we've waited so long
We've waited so long, we've waited so long
I'm gonna take you on a trip so far from here
I've got two tickets in my pocket, now baby, we're gonna disappear
We've waited so long, we've waited so long
We've waited so long, we've waited so long
I've got two tickets to paradise
Won't you pack your bags? We'll leave tonight
I've got two tickets to paradise
I've got two tickets to paradise
Ohh-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa
Whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa
I'm gonna take you on a trip so far from here
I've got two tickets in my pocket, baby
We'll disappear, know why?
We've waited so long, we've waited so long
We've waited so long, we've waited so long
I've got two tickets to paradise
Won't you pack your bags? We'll leave tonight
I've got two tickets to paradise
Won't you pack your bags? We'll leave tonight
I've got two tickets to paradise
Won't you pack your bags? We'll leave tonight
I've got two tickets to paradise
I've got two tickets to paradise

If Eddie Money offered me a ticket to come with him to paradise, I'd be ready in a second!
What if it's a one-bed reservation you say? I'll take my chances.
@Derek8581 I know your comment is over a dozen years old, but it's hilarious.
its about a man who loves his woman
i love how you can listen to this song any day of your life 'cause everyone always wants to escape the life and problems they have.
i think it's about a couple wanting to escape the life they live in and/or they want to be left alone together.
i wonder if i can get some tickets...
I'm sorry, does anyone else notice that the main riff is almost exactly the same as the piano part in the second half of layla? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!
such a classic song
i love it, i love it, i love it
i like this song...its weird though, this style of music usually isn't what i'd listen to but theres no denying this is a pretty good song

Yeah cham thats where I originally heard this song since KOQ is my favorite show, now I like a bunch of eddie money songs prolly one of my favorite musicans now.
I dunno how many times I had to hear this on the radio (and LOVE it, by the way) before I got enough sense to look it up.
Great song, though.
