Self Righteous Lyrics
Lift your head again and try this
And I want this, but I can't break through
And I can see you begin to glow
Get up everyone
Were on our own now
Lift your head again try this
And I want this but I can't break through
And your burning lights red and blue
All you sinners
And were all alone
What's ours is ours
And outside rain
It's just a shower
And then I feel you breathe
And I let go of the hours
And I feel your skin
And I let you in
And that's my dream
Again and again
I feel the hours
Sliding by
Get up on your own now
Way up all alone now
Lift your head again and try this
You're the only thing that's real
And we don't need to beg or steal

i think all these comments symbolizes the song... everyone claims the right to be right on how they view or understand the song... talk about self righteousness... where have you sinners gone? one right here...

Although some might think that this song is just some kind of half-assed 3EB/Moldy Peaches hybrid it is much more than that. At first, I didn't like this song, it was too alien. However, after multiple listenings I realized the point of this song. Whether it is critics or just people in general, everyone thinks they are so self-rightous (especially Christians). The line that states "Where have all you sinners gone," particularily hits home due to the fact that I realize no one is willing to admit they are wrong or even misguided. It truly is a sad world we live in...
Christians are the opposite of self righteous as they claim the righteousness of God. Your judgment of them is what is self righteous.

all of my friends don't like this song because of the female voice in the song. I think this makes the song, and brings deep meaning to the point that he is trying to make that everyone is so self rightous. it makes you stop and think about how you see things a little.

As petey3eb I didn't like this song either... but then I listen to it calmly and I ended up loving it. I think people won't realize how great this song is, and that's sad because it REALLY is. I think is a different song is about how we give to many importance to ourselves, and we often don't accept when we are doing something wrong. I also think that the meaning goes deeper than that. Like the part of "Do you want this, I do, and I want this, but I can't break through" is about wanting something so much but being afraid to go for it. "I can see you begin to glow" "you are the only thing that's real" is like when you start realizing how amazing and true a person can be. "Get up everyone now, we're on our own know" Is when you realize you are all alone and there's no one else for you but youself, because the truth is that we will be the only persons that we'll keep being true to ourselves, no one else is gonna think always on what's best for us, not even our friends, at least not always. One of my favorite lines is: "And outside rains, and it's just a shower, and then I feel you breathe, and I let go the hours, and I feel your skin, and I let you in, and that's my dream, again and again." For me means to be with someone you aprecciate so much and in some kind of way you are in love with, and the only thing you want is to stay inside that person, to feel him/her close at the point of becoming part of the same human being. Oh yeah... I've been there. I LOVE this song so much, people is missing of a great song! That's my humble interpretation of this song... thanks again 3eb.

When I first heard this song I couldn't stand the woman's voice...now I love it - It's very mellow and soothing.

A lot of people think this song is about sex. I can see how they'd think that, but I like to believe it's deeper that that.

in response to petey3eb.... the very essence of christianity lies on the basis to first admit we are sinners and therefore have to be ssaved by God. So you generalizing Christians like that doesn't even make sense. ... however, i do agree that there are people out there who do honestly believe they are completely righteous/better than the rest of everyone else. there may be people who even happen to be christians who think they are better than everyone else...they're apparently wrong and need to be corrected...but jsut so you know...don't make that generalization. its like saying all black people are criminals. as for the meaning of the song, i agree with you. there are many people who do seem to have that attitude about themselves. put themselves on a pedestal and believe they are better than the rest. this also goes both ways tho....what if someone WAS better than you? would you be willing to admit it? or would you be too self righteous?

That talking is sucky

One of the few good 3EB songs, and it only gets my fanfare because Kimya Dawson's in it.
This is all speculation, but I think the song is about a couple in love and almost ready to admit it to each other. "Everyone is so self-righteous" is directed at people talking trash about the couple. "and your burning lights red and blue" are the cops. "Lift your head again try this" references overcoming/forgetting about their bleak past. Hence, the people talking trash about them.
Very mellow. The lyrics are bit too abstract for me, though.
