Backdrifts (Honeymoon Is Over) Lyrics
We're damaged goods
What the hell, we've got nothing more to lose
One burst and we will probably crumble
We're backdrifting
This far but no further
I'm hanging off a branch
I'm teetering on a breaker
Honey sweets, so fall asleep
I'm backsliding
You fell into her arms
We tried but there was nothing we could do
Nothing we could do
All evidence has been buried
All tapes have been erased
But your footsteps give you away
So you're backtracking
You fell into our arms
We tried but there was nothing we could do
Nothing we could do
You fell into our
You fell into a
We're damaged goods
What the hell, we've got nothing more to lose
One burst and we will probably crumble
We're backdrifters

basically about regression (obviously) although the music seems to me a little upbeat compared to other tracks on hail to the thief... sort of like "i've hit rock bottom and i like it. come join me!"
@matrixmouse7 then again, it is a really good song.

The dreamy, infinite hopeful, worry-less drapes have already been pulled, the backdrifters see each other for who they really were. Unwittingly, they had already set themselves up for a disaster, slowly pick-off one another to the edge, and in turning to their friends, family, and divorce attorneys, cannot rectify what has been lost. The regressive dynamics of relationships.
Reminds me of For No One by the Beatles.

this song is amazing....this band is a one and only. "what the hell, we've got nothing more to lose" trippy song too.... depressing song....very much so.

I love the tone of this one. Soft and dark. The melody Thom sings is beautiful. I don't get the words at all. I think sometimes Thom should try and be more subtle with the "depressing" images, and less subtle with the political ones.

The bit that goes, 'hanging of a branch...' really reminds of this Jain proverb (which I can't find at all now on the net, it was in a book) about desire and so on, something like, a man is running from a beast and fianally finds a tree to escape into, and he is hanging from this branch, thorns in his hands, danger below, but in the tree is a bees nest and honey is dripping into his mouth and that is the only pleasure he has... but if he would just climb up into the tree he would have all the honey and be safe and happy. The tree being god. I tell it badly, anyway, thats what it reminds me of.
that's very interesting.. i think it's really likely to be an allusion to that.

This songs sounds like U2... It rocks... For me it´s about a ephemeral relationship, as this music´s alternative title says (honeymoon is over)

seems pretty straightforward.
Just saying how meaningless our individual lives have become in the grand scheme of things, with the patriot act and all. It seems to be about a fear of having your entire past and present erased from the face of the earth, almost to have never existed in the first place as in 1984.
Hey, the US government can imprison you indefinately without giving you access to a lawyer if they suspect you of "terrorism," it only seems like a matter of time...

When Hail came out, I seriously thought I was the only person who liked this song.

no way, dude, this was the only tune that really stood out for me on it. kid a's still their best album.
