Everywhere someone's getting over
Everybody cries
And sometimes you can still lose even if you really try
Talking about the dream
Like the dream is over
Talk like that
Won't get you nowhere
Everybody's trusting in the heart
Like the heart don't lie

And that's all that I need, yeah
Someone else to cling to, yeah
Someone I can lean on
Until I don't need to
Just stay all through the night
In the morning let me down
Cause that's all that I need right now

Everywhere someone's getting over
Everybodys life is someone
People still use other people with a crooked smile
And all around the world there's a sinking feeling
Out there right now someone's feeling
Down on themselves and don't know why
Every night

And that's all that I need, yeah
Someone else to cling to, yeah
Someone I can lean on
Until I don't need to
Just stay all through the night, yeah
In the morning let me down
Cause that's all that I need right now

And life ain't no beauty show
We don't know where tomorrow ends
And when we're sad
It's kind of a drag

Just stay all through the night
In the morning let me down
Yeah, cause that's all that I need
Yeah, that's all that I need
Yeah, that's all that I need
That's all that I need right now
Right now

    Song Meaning

I feel that this song is mostly about the lie that is love. The Guy has realized that A) You can still lose even if you really try and B)Everybody's trusting in the heart Like the heart don't lie.

I feel like this attacks the idea that their is some foolproof plan that prevents people from getting hurt or from failing.

To me this is more about the general message that the world offers us about love than an specific relationship.

So in the end we might just be better off cutting our losses and just taking what we can get and settling for the basic need of having someone to cling to at night, that will leave in the morning, because at least that is certain.

Rob is amazing, I wish I could ask him about all his songs!

i'm gonna disagree w/ diegorocksusa... given the tone of the song, and the line "just stay all through the night and in the morning let me down" i think Rob is sorta being sarcastic... all i need is someone to cling to who'll let me down all the time. right. especially when you take into account how he's talking about people using each other... maybs somebody used him and he finally realized how little he really needed that and sorta mocked it.

I'm surprised more people have written on here because its such a great song. I think its talking about the sorrows that people endure and that life isn't always fair like you think it should be. And sometimes the things that you believe to be true don't always hold up and surpass everything else which is sad. I like where he says "talk about the dream like the dream is over, talk like that won't get you nowhere" to me that means that you shouldn't expect something to happen the way you want it without putting any effort into it. Talking about doing things is easy but you have to actually go out there and make it happen. And sometimes when you expect something to go one way it doesn't but it turns out totally unexpectedly. Thats whats weird about life...it alway knows how to twist and make things unexpected and interesting. That can be good - or bad. But its always exciting seeing what actually happens after you wait for so long to see the results.

i kinda agree with lasombra; i always thought this song was about how he just wants somebody for the night. when he says "and in the morning let me down", he knows they're gonna leave & he's ok with that because he was never looking for love in the first place.

What this song says is that the only constant in life is change; there are no guarantees, but that's no reason to ever give up; sometimes things go wrong, sometimes things go right; everyone goes through sad times, and everyone needs someone else to lean on every once in awhile. Bottom line: life is unpredictable, but we're all in it together.

Lovely song, makes me smile when I don't even feel like. I think it does express some real facts, life ain't easy...people lie, get depressed...And my favourite line, which I quote a lot: "You can still lose even if you really try": it's like saying, let's be realistic, some things are out of our hands, but still we only can try and do the best of ourselves.

this song is MY LIFE. i LOVE this song, i don't think you can get much better. first of all i love matchbox twenty, second, this song is so very true. i love the line "Everybody's trusting in the heart Like the heart don't lie". i feel you can't really get any truer than that. the heart has such power over our mind and although it always seems to know the right way it rarely ever turns out the way you think it will. another AMAZING line is "But that's all that I need Someone else to cling to Someone I can lean on until" i think that is all we need, love. to me it seems as though the meaning of life is truely love, that's what we need to survive this crazy world, and matchbox twenty hits it right on the spot

When I listen to this song, no matter how down or low I'm feeling, it kinda reminds me that I'm not the only person feeling that way. Its a really comforting song

Ministry
Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

Techno Ted
Audioslave
Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
