As I sit here and slowly close my eyes
I take another deep breath
And feel the wind pass through my body
I'm the one in your soul
Reflecting inner light
Protect the ones who hold you
Cradling in your inner child

I need serenity
In a place where I can hide
I need serenity
Nothing changes, days go by

Where do we go when we just don't know
And how do we relight the flame when it's cold
Why do we dream when our thoughts mean nothing
And when will we learn to control

Tragic visions slowly stole my life
Tore away everything
Cheating me out of my time
I'm the one who loves you
No matter wrong or right
And every day I hold you
I hold you with my inner child

I need serenity
In a place where I can hide
I need serenity
Nothing changes, days go by

Where do we go when we just don't know
And how do we relight the flame when it's cold
Why do we dream when our thoughts mean nothing
And when will we learn to control

Where do we go when we just don't know
And how do we relight the flame when it's cold
Why do we dream when our thoughts mean nothing
And when will we learn to control

(I need serenity) Where do we go when we just don't know (I need serenity)
And how do we relight the flame when it's cold (I need serenity)
Why do we dream when our thoughts mean nothing (I need serenity)
And when will we learn to control

I think this song is about connecting with our higher selves or god in effort to free ourselves from the ego and material/physical pains of this life... to find peace in knowing there is more than just this life... and if we try to free our minds and see our lives thru the eyes god would see us... then we may feel comfort and that peace... this is very hard to do and yes you need to be able to meditate, but it does help free you from stress and other burdens you may be going through... or you could just get stoned... lol

Wow I honestly can't believe no one has commented on this song yet ... probably one of the most moving and spiritual pieces of music i have heard a band play in ... forever. excellent song

Actually king nothing, youre right. Its a song sully wrote after reading "Ghost Rider" by Neil Peart (drummer for Rush). Neil's wife and daughter were both killed within about a year of each other and neil takes his motorcycle out on the road to vent and kinda get away. Its an excellent book by the way.

I personally believe in my heart of hearts that this tune about Sully's lack of bladder control. Can't anyone hear his cry for help? "I need Serenity...nothing changes, days go by!" When he says, "Where do we go when we just don't know...", it means the poor guy just pissed his pants! That's the most obvious meaning I could come up with. Does anybody disagree with me?

    :)

OpinionHead, dont get me wrong, but there are no words that will describe how much i disagree with you, and i just dont understand why you would think something like that. but everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so... enjoy that theory.

Finally!!! Somebody fell for the joke. I was waiting for this too happen. I work in a stuffy receiving area and one of the only saving graces is the fact that the rest of my co-workers are musicheads. One guy is a huge Godsmack fan and I heard the song Serenity. I saw the box of pads and I came up with the "true meaning" of the song. He didn't think the joke was funny as I am sure you did, Phoenix. The smiley face at the bottom should have given the joke away. I really like this and it is very deep but is it sacreligious to come up with a funny and retarded meaning for it?

Ha!!! I laughed my ass off when I read your interpretation OpinonHead. I can't believe I never saw that in the song before. I'm also surprised there are such few comments on this song. Its such a great song, being on of my favorites.

good song to have in the background while meditating, lol... i think the whole "bladder-control" joke thing was kind of stupid... i guess i just don't like potty humor. i like the line "Why do we dream when our thoughts mean nothing?" its a good question

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

Fortnight
Taylor Swift
The song 'Fortnight' by Taylor Swift and Post Malone tells a story about strong feelings, complicated relationships, and secret wishes. It talks about love, betrayal, and wanting someone who doesn't feel the same. The word 'fortnight' shows short-lived happiness and guilty pleasures, leading to sadness. It shows how messy relationships can be and the results of hiding emotions. “I was supposed to be sent away / But they forgot to come and get me,” she kickstarts the song in the first verse with lines suggesting an admission to a hospital for people with mental illnesses. She goes in the verse admitting her lover is the reason why she is like this. In the chorus, she sings about their time in love and reflects on how he has now settled with someone else. “I took the miracle move-on drug, the effects were temporary / And I love you, it’s ruining my life,” on the second verse she details her struggles to forget about him and the negative effects of her failure. “Thought of callin’ ya, but you won’t pick up / ‘Nother fortnight lost in America,” Post Malone sings in the outro.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
