So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.

he's searching for the right person to love and he wants someone to say to him "I love you" and mean it not just say it and not really mean it.. he will wait until the end of time to hear someone say it like they mean it
I totally agree /w Shorty9847. This is one of my fav. Clay Aiken songs. It's really upbeat 2. Everytime I hear it I just want 2 dance.
I'm as big of a Clay fan as the next person, but this song is obviously about a stripper.
The first paragraph describes her profession and the way he's there even though he wants true love.
The chorus is his fight within himself, wanting so bad to be loved, and questioning if she cares about him even though he means nothing.
In the third paragraph "It's not that I don't really like the attention" he is expressing that he likes what she's doing, fake attention or not, he cant help but enjoy himself. "I feel like the only man in the room.", this emphasizes her career; there are many other men in the room. "Are you really sincere, is this just something that you do?", he is still torn: He wants to believe that with him it is real and more than just the girl paying her rent.
The last paragaph is just repeating how much he wants love, and how he doesnt want to be hurt again (why he turns to a stripper: shallow love, even though he ends up being infatuated anyway)
