Lifelines Lyrics

One time
To know that it's real
One time
To know how it feels
That's all

One call
Your voice on the phone
One place
A moment alone
That's all

What do you see?
What do you know?
What are the signs?
What do I do?
Just follow your lifeline through
What if it hurts?
What then?
What do you do?
What do you say?
Don't throw your lifeline away
Don't throw your lifeline away

One time
Just once in my life
Yeah, one time
To know it can happen, twice
One shot
Of a clear blue sky
One look
I see no reasons why we can't
One chance
To go back to the point where everything starts
One chance
To keep it together when things fall apart
One sign
To make us believe it's true

What do you see?
Where do we go?
What are the signs?
How do we grow?
By letting your lifeline show
What if we do?
What up to now?
What do you say?
How do I know?
Don't let your lifeline go
Don't let your lifeline go
Don't let your lifeline go

Folks, I am shocked...it's such a terrible shame A-ha were never REALY heard. I will come around to doing an interpretation of this song eventually. I will be doing one for all of them. I've been a life long fan from day 1 of the release of Take on Me.

@Shadowsoal2000 Hurry up then. We've been waiting for 14 years. Even The Soft Rains Of April bloke would be inpatient by now.

To me, there are 2 meanings to this song.

The first meaning is that things in life only happen 1 time. It is about making the best out of every situation and hold on to those relationships that mean the most.

My second interpretation comes from being a parent. If you look at the lyrics as a conversation between a child and a parent it would look somethine like this.

Child, " What if it hurts, what then? What do we do, what do you say?" Parent, "Don't throw your lifeline away"

This is a parent passing on wisdom and life lessons to their child. This is where the song holds a more deeper meaning for me.

@widget68 –> Thank you for sharing your interpretation. I agree! :)

I know what you mean that not many people know them, but ah - they have apparently sold over 80 million albums, so actually, sh!t loads of people have heard them. Awesome song!!

Im only 17 and I am completely in love with A-Ha's music!! People look at me funny when I tell them that though, or they dont know who they are until I mention take on me! (Even though they have so many better songs than that one!!)

But yeah back to the point. I think this song is about how important the people you love in your life should be to you and how no matter what happens everything is ok.

It's hard being a teenager and liking 80's music...nobody understands but your mom -.-

Try the Morten Harket's solo album, Wild Seed. A real treasure.

It's about realizing a mistake in leaving your love & your relationship with them. And hoping that maybe you can get back together and make it work.. It's about the importance of having a person in this world that truly loves you.. Without your "lifeline" keeps you 'alive' without that person you have no hope. It's about the beauty in true love and personal growth. (I'm 17 and love Morton and paul and mags of a-ha)
