El Mañana Lyrics

Summer don't know me no more
Eager man, that's all

Summer don't know me
He just let me love in my sea
Cause I do know, Lord
From you that
Just died, yeah

I saw that day
Lost my mind
Lord, I'm fine
Maybe in time
You'll want to be mine

Don't stop the buck when it comes
It's the dawn, you'll see

Money won't get there
Ten years passed, and now
You'll flee

If you do that
I'll be some
To find you

I saw that day
Lost my mind
Lord, I'm fine
Maybe in time
You'll want to be mine

I saw that day
Lost my mind
Lord, I'm fine
Maybe in time
You'll want to be mine
Maybe in time
You'll want to be mine
Maybe in time
You'll want to be mine

Not to sound like a dick, but none of these really make sense. I can't see this being about a soldier, i can't see this even being about a dieing man. I think it's all being taken too literal. Of course i say "I Think" because none of us really know, but i find it hard to believe this could mean anything as cheesy as what has been suggested. I'm basically going to write this from stanza to stanza in order. Follow the lines to see what i mean.

This man is not dieing. He is very much in pain, but its emotional pain. Summer is a season of warmth, fun, enjoyment, happiness. All these feelings are gone to him, ghosts. However, he doesn't feel that it's his fault. He doesnt consider Summer a stranger, it sees him as a stranger. He is not the man he used to be, happiness has left him and he hopes he can get it back one day.

This man is begging God for his happiness back, for what he once had. He is desperately searching for it. He knows he will find happiness one day through the Lord however, because Jesus died and rose from the grave. So he knows one day he will "rise" also.

Then he goes to saying how he saw happiness one day, and he lost his mind also when he lost it. Whether he is talking about a girl, his possessions, his family, his friends, or everything he holds dear, we don't know. However, once again he brings God back into it. He is still having faith that the Lord will bring it all back. He has found God, and he's just waiting and hoping that the Lord will bring him everything back and make him happy again. This may be in death, for taking him from the cruel world he lives in....as an act of mercy. Or maybe the less dramatic, that he just wants his life back, and he knows if he waits long enough, maybe one day God will reward him for his patience.

He then goes to the idea of going with the flow. Don't hold things dear, caged. It's confusing until you read the next line. He suggests money as one of these objects. Don't hold on to your money, you can't take it with you, and it won't get you to heaven. It also won't bring you happiness.

Your explanation is so beautiful that it brought me to tears, I've had trouble interpreting this. Thank you so much for sharing this.

El Mañana is also spanish for "the tommorow". I think that "the tommorow" is the correct translation for this song.

You're completely right.

Not Valid

it just means "tomorrow,"

Not Valid

manana can also mean morning but i could be thinking of la manana. but yes you are correct

@Fuchikoma did you know that it was murdocs idea to kill off noodle. Not really killing her though. It turns out that the entire El Mañana conspiracy was calculated specifically to get rid of an enemy of the band: Little Jimmy Manson, a psychotic hippie turned industry executive who was set on sabotaging Gorillaz. The reason why was because Jimmy had auditioned for Gorillaz a few years back, but was turned down after Noodle got the job. He has had a grudge with Gorillaz ever since. Murdoc saw Jimmy's plan and decided to get rid of Jimmy before it was too...

Good song.

In fact, the entire album is great.

I believe the lyrics on this page are wrong.. So most of the asumptions by people here may be incorrect...

The Line "Cause I do know, Lord, from you that just died, yeah " Is what I believe to be "Cause I too know love, From you then, Just Died yea" Which to me this whole song seems to be about a relationship gone horribly bad and she has left him and that line says he also sees the love is gone as she broke up with him (and where the line "Maybe in time You'll want to be mine" (saying you...

I really love this song. It's my favourite on the album. The title translated into spanish is "The Morning".. but that might just be the title.. The booklet in the album has a picture of the Grim Reaper who seems to be dangling from a helicopter to sum up El Manana though..

actualy theheartless, the tittle in spanish is ''the day of tommorow'' witch is also why 2-D sings the part'' maby in time, you'll want to be mine'' have a nice day :)

Mañana can either mean morning or tomorrow. Albarn might have chosen the name just because it's a double meaning.

Could be a multi-lingual play on words :P

The mourning

But yes it seems more to be a tommorowish song, looking ahead

Am I the only person left on Earth who knows grammar, punctuation, and spelling? "Typo" doesn't even begin to describe how the English language is being butchered online these days... Maybe that's what "Last Living Souls" is about....

Anyway, I agree that this song is about a man who is dying. I don't believe that he's in Iraq, but he did serve there. The song takes place in the future. He doesn't feel that God wants him anymore. "Summer don't know me" implies to me that he feels out of place during the summer (a time of hot weather and LIFE) because he took innocent lives in Iraq (a time of hot weather and DEATH). The innocent blood he took makes him feel guilty and sinful to the point that he can't attone for it. "Lost my mind" is the only explanation that he can offer for his actions, and he believes that god won't think it's a good excuse. Hence the repetition of "Maybe in time You'll want to be mine." He's trying desperately to convince himself that there is still hope for him.

Thanks for pointing out the spelling and grammar, people these days are atrocious to the English language.

@FacUtSciam For all the trash talking, your English is no better. Ellipses are not periods, and if you attempt to end a sentence with one, you still need to follow it with a period. Quotations also require punctuation. You misspelled "atone", and "God" is a proper noun. These are just the syntactical errors, your semantics are much worse.

I think it is the Hiroshima bombing, which happened on August 6 (summer) at 8:15 (morning). And also at the end of the music video they drop a nuke on Noodle.

"El Manana" spanish for "The Morning" being a play on words meaning "The Mourning"

"El maÃ~+mn~ana" really is an expresion that evoke a nearby future, if the they wanted to make reference to "The morning" they would have wrotten "La maÃ~+mn~ana", at least that is what I think
