Every Planet We Reach Is Dead Lyrics

I lost my land like I lost my way
So no loose ends
Nothing to see me down
How are we going to work this out

Dreams aren't bad, I had turned back
I love the girl
But God only knows it's
Getting hard to see the sun coming through
I love you
But what are we going to do

Picture on the dreamer
I'll take you deeper
Down to the sleepy glow
Time is a low
Don't you know
What are we going to do

When you go back
All the second selfless days
You're in love with him
I want to see you again
I love you
But what are we going to do

From Gorillaz' autobio, Rise of the Orge

Noodle: Every planet we reach is dead. An image of...catching a glimpse of your soul, the battlefield, from above. 'I lost my land.' This is...how d'you put it...An 'unloaded question'. A proposal to question ourselves and our decisions.

Russel: There's a Charles Bukowski quote that's goes something like...'If you're losing your soul and you know it, then you've still got a soul left to lose.' You can kinda hear this sentiment in the line, 'I lost my way, what am I going to do?'

Noodle: Sometimes the answers are not available. And sometimes describing the problem is a part of the solution.

Murdoc: And sometimes, if you ignore a problem, it'll go away...eventually.

It's really just about losing and finding your soul through the decisions and actions you make. The beauty of good song writing though is when you can interpret the song in many ways, which you've all done. It'd odd though how songs are always turned into a love song. That's what most seek for in life.

I think we all could agree that no matter what the lyrics in a song, 90% of all people will interperate it as a love song. But dont you think that Albarn would have something better to write songs about at an age of 40 than a damn long distance relationship? Maybe in his diary but not in such a deep and philosophical album as Demon Days. If the song would have been about him liking a girl he wouldnt write the line "I like the girl".

As with many of gorillaz-songs, the lyrics are really hard to interperate. But maybe something about a longing for someone or something above ourselves to help us define our existence. Just like we try to find life on other planets but allways find just another "dead" planet.

"I lost my leg like I lost my way So no loose ends Nothing to see me down How are we going to work this out?"

I think that this is referring to is that the relationship has no loose ends, no kids essentially, and that there's nothing to pad his fall from this one. Also stating that he wants things to work out.

"Dreams aren't bad, I had to admit I love the girl But God only knows it's Getting harder to see the sun coming through I love you But what are we going to do?"

He loved her, his ideals of a future with her he sees as so bright, but that's fading more and more, he's become more resolved that there's no way it can happen

"Picture I'm the dreamer I'll take you deeper Down to the sleepy glow Time is a low Don't you know? What are we going to do?"

He's saying he's so hopeful and ignoring reality, that by prolonging things with his hopes he keeps them both in a low place. There's only so much time in life he's coming to realize.

"When you go down All the sick and selfless days"

I agree that this is her falling, her down emotionally, due to all the selfless days that were tainted by dreams rather than validated by the present situation

"I want to see you again I love you But what are we going to do? "

He loves her, wants to be close to her, see her, but he knows things aren't right.

I think I agree with tamuz, that it's about wishing a girl would like you, or notice you, for that matter. but I think the term 'sick and selfless' means that he's given so much of his energy (and himself, for that matter) into this girl. He's given too much. he hasn't gotten anything back from her, therefore he becomes mentally ill. the sick in sick and selfless.

I think it's about someone who's relationships keep failing. They have this idea of a soul-mate and every time another relationship goes down that ideal person seems to fade more until it seems like all planets they attempt to settle will be dead, so why try?

My Interpretation

I sort of agree with what Tamuz is saying; I don't feel like the relationship is failing because of long distance, but because one of them is doing something wrong. I beleive it's the girl, because he sings

"I love the girl But God only knows it's Getting harder to see the sun coming through I love you But what are we going to do?"

I think he loves her, but she's starting to lose interest in him.

"I lost my leg like I lost my way So no loose ends Nothing to see me down How are we going to work this out?"

He's already lost something, and he feels like he's going to lose her too.

My Interpretation

I don't really see how everyone can jump to entertaining the idea of a woman's heart so quickly.

I suppose the most simplistic answer is always the easiest to pass though.

To figure a riddle means to look at all the details and formulate something that fits all the allusions. That includes the place where the general idea is set: THE TITLE! :P

If you look at from a humanization on planetary perspective you can easily create your own metaphors. The girl would be a young "Mother" Earth, sun hardly coming through would be pollution, dreams, relevance and perception of time, nostalgic regret, etc.

I do have a possible lyric correction that I've heard both ways:

"When you go down All the sick and selfless days

I want to see you again"

to

"When you go back All the second selfless days You're in love with him I want to see you again"

Song Meaning

I feel that this song relates to me and me current situation. I have a girlfriend, whom I love very much, but I only get to see her about an hour and a half total a week "Time is a low". she recently got a job, and it's getting harder to see her, between that and college. "Getting harder to see the sun coming through"

Our relationship is strained, but not because we don't love each other or get along, but because we have so little time together, and we've tried so many solutions "What are we going to do" but none of them really worked out. To me, the singer is singing about a similar situation. Myself and the singer try so hard to make the relationship work, but it strains me, but I just can't bear to stop "All the sick and selfless days"

But, that's just how I interpret it.

this song reminds me of a long distance relationship where they met once and it drives them crazy that they arent always around each other now

Exactly. Like the long-distance relationship of 2D and Noodle!

Not Valid

Except, well you know they've definitely met more than once. :/
