He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.
I see you standing on the corner with your dress so high
And all the cars slow down as they see you driving by
Thought you said you had some place to go
What you doing up here putting it all on show?
Darling it hurts to see you down Darlinghurst tonight
Do you remember Darling how we laughed and cried
We said we'd be together till the day we died
How could something so good turn so bad?
I'd do it all again 'coz you're the best I've ever had
Darling it hurts to see you down Darlinghurst tonight
See that man with the glad hands
I want to kill him but it wouldn't be right
Now here comes another man with the gladbags
I want to break him but it's not my fight
In one hand and out the other
Baby I don't even know why you bother
Darling it hurts to see you down Darlinghurst tonight

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

This is about bronies. They communicate by stomping.
For non-Australians, Darlinghurst is a suburb in Sydney near Kings Cross known for prostitution. The songs about a man who realises his girlfriend is a prostitute.
yep its about about pros.
but im not sure i get the ' Now here comes another man with the gladbags' part. does glad bags mean condoms?
'that man with the glad hands' is the men slowing as they drive by looking for prostitutes. The man with the 'gladbags' sells drugs in zip-lock glad bags completing this poor girls awful circle of life of prostituting herself to pay for the drugs and over and over again... 'in one hand and out the other, baby i dont even know why you bother!'
just a thought isn't Paul Kelly from melbourne and a few of his songs like from st kilda to kings cross and leaps and bounds are about places in melbourne so why is he referring to darlinghurst which is in Sydney surely there's a trashy prostitution strip bar drug laden suburb in melbourne he can refer to
p.s. surely my bias indicates I am from Sydney
hes from adelaide beleive it or not!

he grew up in melbourne though, I think darlinghurst is a good example 4 this song
@haydos He also lived in Sydney for a time. Incident on South Dowling was also set in Sydney.
Haydos, Paul Kelly was born in Adelaide (heard the song??) He lived in Melbourne, Sydney then back in Melbourne. Grab a copy of Stuart Coupe's biography 'Paul Kelly: The Man, The Music, and The Life In Between.' Any PK fan should read it. Richard
