Lady called the blue boy, love
She took him home
Made himself an idol, yes
So he turned to stone
Like a pilgrim, she traveled
To place her flowers
Before his granite grace
And she prayed aloud for love
To waken in his face
In his face, oh
Sometimes in the evening
He would read to her
Roll her in his arms
And give his seed to her
She would wake in the morning
Without him
And go to the window
And look out through the pain
But the statue in her garden
He always looked the same
He looked the same, ah
Bring her boots of leather
And she will dance for him
Shyly from a feather fan
She'll glance for him
Here he comes after midnight
To find her again
He will come a few times more
'Til he finds a lady statue
Standing in a door
In her door, oh
She took him home
Made himself an idol, yes
So he turned to stone
Like a pilgrim, she traveled
To place her flowers
Before his granite grace
And she prayed aloud for love
To waken in his face
In his face, oh
Sometimes in the evening
He would read to her
Roll her in his arms
And give his seed to her
She would wake in the morning
Without him
And go to the window
And look out through the pain
But the statue in her garden
He always looked the same
He looked the same, ah
Bring her boots of leather
And she will dance for him
Shyly from a feather fan
She'll glance for him
Here he comes after midnight
To find her again
He will come a few times more
'Til he finds a lady statue
Standing in a door
In her door, oh

this one is tricky, but this is the best i can come up with for now: this seems to be about a relationship in which the woman is in love with the man, but the man is no longer (or never really was) in love with the woman.
she "prays aloud for love to awaken in his face" but he remains a "statue"-- cold, hard, and unfeeling. he seems to be looking only for stimulation. "here he comes after midnight" seems to indicate that she's been waiting a while and he's late, and she wakes in the morning without him.
clearly she gives more to the relationship and cares more about it than he does. she will dance for him and glance for him, but in the end, she can only keep doing this so much until not receiving any warmth in return forces her to become cold and impassionate too.
I'd really like to know who she is singing about in this song. I have the feeling it's a famous performer. The line "made hiself an idol" and the line "bring her boots of leather" makes me wonder if it's about Bob Dylan (he wrote a song titled "Boots of Spanish Leather")but I can't find any references about them having a relationship.
i always heard it was about Graham Nash...girlslikeusthemusic.com/chapter-ten/<br /> Those songs of Joni's that are clearly or presumably about life with Graham reflect that push-pull of intimacy, in lyric styles ranging from the biblical reference ("He would read to her / Roll her in his arms / And give his seed to her," in the achingly lovely Blue Boy"),
Good try Chelseamorning! This is a tough nut to crack! Maybe the last verse means that he will stop coming to her when she finally loses interest and turns to stone as well. But why would it be called Blue boy ? That makes no sense to me! Blue Boy is a famous painting by Gainsborough of a pretty boy dressed all in blue. It reminds me of the line, "He made himself an idol.". Maybe he objectified himself as a pretty young man to be admired. For awhile she went along with it but eventually got tired of him.
okay, i have no idea whatsoever this song is talking about, but if you see ay mistake i hadn't noticed, i'll edit it
