On the roller coaster ride
That my emotions have to take me on
I heard a newborn baby cry
Through the night

I heard a perfect echo die
Into an anonymous wall of digital sound
Somewhere deep inside
Of my soul

A natural beauty should be preserved like a monument to nature
Don't judge yourself too harsh, my love
Or someday you might find your soul endangered
A natural beauty should be preserved like a monument to nature

Amazon
You had so much and now so much is gone
What are you gonna do
With your life?

What a lucky man
To see the earth before it touched his hand
What an angry fool
To condemn

One more night to go
One more sleep upon your burning banks
A greedy man never knows
What he's done

A natural beauty should be preserved like a monument to nature
Don't start yourself too short, my love
Or someday you might find your soul endangered
A natural beauty should be preserved like a monument to nature

Went to the rodeo today
I saw the cowgirls lined up on the fence
A brand new Chevrolet
A brand new pair of seamless pants

We watched the moment of defeat
Played back over on the video screen
Somewhere deep inside
Of my soul

A natural beauty should be preserved like a monument

This is also my favourite Neil Young song. My parents brought me up on Neil Young, and I love the big songs, but this one is a special, more secret song.

I've been listening to it on the Dreamin' Man live CD. I got the CD about a year ago and I have listened to it a lot throughout this year, especially when feeling alone.

On Saturday night two weeks ago, I was getting ready for bed, due to get up and go running in the wilderness at 6am the next day. This song became my personal soundtrack to doing that.

I love the great outdoors, and this is a prayer to the great outdoors. I think it expresses the feeling that we'll never be alone, because mother nature is all around us (as long as we protect her).

Powerful and poetic--typical Neil. Very beautiful song with an obvious meaning. We need to take a step back and realize all the good thigns we have, becasue they will one day be gone. Preserve beauty, preseve goodness, preserve life.

A love song with Earth as the subject of the song, or really the object of the love. Wonderful stuff.

    My Interpretation

I see it more as a statement to women who may not be beauty queens, but have natural beauty and inner beauty, of which Neil says, "a natural beauty should be preserved like a monument in nature". To the natural beauties: "don't judge yourself too harsh my love, or one day you might find your soul endangered". Love yourself, for who you are, be yourself, or lose your soul...

A top 3 Neil Young song for me - a hidden gem. One of those songs that takes you over emotionally and transports you somewhere peaceful and beautiful. Safe and loving. My wife makes me feel this way. She is my natural beauty. Thank you Neil for a gift that has nourished my soul for 30 years now.

Does anyone know what 'moment of defeat' he is talking about? During the rodeo show or something?
