So let's face it this was never what you wanted
And I know it's fun to pretend
Now, blank stares and empty threats
Are all I have
They're all I have

So drown me and if you can
Or we could just have conversation
And I fall, I fall, I falter
But I found you, before I drift away

Now you still speak of day old hate
Though your whole world has gone up into flames
And isn't it great to find that you're really worth nothing
And how safe it is to feel safe

So drown me and if you can
Or we could just have conversation
And I fall, I fall, I fall down
But I found you, before I drift away

The things we do just to stay alive
The things we do just to stay alive
The things we do just to stay alive
The things we do just to keep ourselves alive

    My Interpretation

What this song mean's to me, Line by line. So lets face it, this was never what you wanted, But I know that its fun to pretend.

Someone was going out with a girl. The girl was playing with his feeling's but the boy did not notice this at the time. After the girl broke up with the guy, The guy try's to tell him self that she accutaly did want to be in a relationship with him, when accutaly she was just abusing him for his feeling's and was just trying to get noticed.

Our blank stares and empty threats, Are all I have. They're all I have.

After the break up they do not get along. They keep trying to be friend's but they are continuously arguing.

and I fall, I fall, I faulter. I found you before I drift away

The guy does not know what to do with out her in his life. He is becoming depressed, and finding it hard to do everything. He does not want to be around anyone as he is scared some one will crush him just like the girl did.

Now you still speak of day old hate Though your whole world has gone up into flames

On the odd occasion they do speak it always end up about old time's when they were going out. Though she does not care about the love he had for her.

And isn't it great to find that you're really worth nothing And how safe it is to feel safe.

He is depressed because of this and this lead's him to think that he is worthless. But he also feel's safe now that he has his heart locked away so it will not be hurt again.

So drown me and if you can Or we could just have conversation And I fall, I fall, I faulter. But I found you before I drift away

    Same as above.

The things we do just to stay alive (x3) The things we do just to keep ourselves alive.

By keeping his heart locked up, he know's that he will never go through so much pain again. Even though he want's to be with someone, he is willing not to be so he will never be heart broken.

Sound's like the exactly the same thing that happened to me. . .

I honestly despise admitting that I can relate to songs, especially tragic "love" songs since I'm too "young" to experience "true love", but I'm basically going through this. I've fallen hard for a girl that has her own dreams to chase, she obviously didn't see anyone like me coming into her life, and now here we are in a horrible mess, where we don't know if it's worthy enough to salvage.

    My Opinion

This song is so stunning to listen to. It's so sad and complicated like real life is. I love Acoustic stuff because you can hear the rawness and pain in each word that is sung. You get the true meaning of the lyrics, because sometimes songs are over produced, so they kind of lose what was special about them in the first place, I'll take simplicity over bells, whistles and loops any day.

This is a very therapeutic song for me. I have a playlist on my ipod, for songs like this that really effect me ,so when i'm down or depressed i can listen to them and filter any negative feelings. Therapists recommend it, It really works.

Enough rambling, I think this song is about a complicated relationship of any sort but from one person's point of view.

'So lets face it, this was never what you wanted But I know that its fun to pretend Our blank stares and empty threats Are all I have Theyre all I have'

I think he's pretending that everything is working but inside it's killing him. and it's what he's not saying that's important, He's deluding himself and making things more complicated.

'So drown me.. if you can Or we could just have conversation and I fall, I fall, I falter. I found you before I drift away'

He's drowning under the weight of his delusions and he's trying to find some way to help the situation but it's not gonna work.

'Now you still speak of day old hate Though your whole world has gone up into flames And isn't it great to find that you're really worth nothing And how safe it is to feel safe'

It's falling to bits and he feels worthless, but he'll live the lie if it means that he can tell himself that he's wanted, because walking away is worse (falling without a safety net).

The things we do just to stay alive (x3)

The things we do just to keep ourselves alive

He's referring to everyone being able to do exactly what he's doing, Lie to themselves, Makes it easier than having to face the cold hard facts.

'And isn't it great to find that you're really worth nothing And how safe it is to feel safe'

This gets me every time, everybody feels this at some point in their life, Not nice but necessary, Thanks for reading <3 <3

Obviously lyric meanings are vaslty different to everyone who listens to a song, but to me two lines in this song stand out: "Now you still speak of day old hate, though your whole world has gone up into flames". To me it seems like he's saying that this person is focusing so much on how people have wronged them in the past, that they can't see whats happening in their life now. They're looking back on the "hate" that have for people in their past that have done them wrong, and aren't focusing on their current situation. I think it's important for us to remember to let go and move on.

The Girl, like everyone else, had her natural needs and she picked a victim and started playing games. The boy was a bit of naive[in the beginning] and did everything with her. Although she would never get what she wanted[The Ideal], she just tried to transform him, but you just simply cannot change peoples nature and characteristics. Finally when the relationship was fading and she was dumped, she got mad, because he had understood it. She threated him, but he doesen´t care, because he knows that she´s barely nothing and deceiving bitch. Also he understands her, because she had her needs, but still he´s got only empty warnings from her and nothing else. It´s so amazing song that I have listened it for hours and still can´t get enough. It also reminds me my ex, who tried to shape my characteristics, but I had enough and ended it.

I waste my time on my past and mistakes even though none of that matters. Everything is burned out now. I see myself as I truly am because all my masks have fallen off. Oh and it's a blessing to feel worthless. Not safe anymore- but faults are out in the open, waiting to be strengthened.

seems to be about an abrupt and bitter end to the relationship. 'Day old hate' is obviously talking about this instant resentment that has occured 'Blank stares and empty threats' depicts the standoff situation.

I first heard this song when I was having an affair with a married woman. We didn't want to fall in love but we did. It just made life complicated for a very long time. And it deffinately is more fun to pretend that things are going to turn out in your favour, it's easier for that breif moment. "the things we do just to stay alive" just shows that we at one point will do anything to hold on to something.

    My Interpretation

Doesn't anyone think this has to do with one-night stands? think about it. the idea of the morning after, the 'day old hate' that comes after a night that was a mistake in hindsight but made sense at the time. 'It was never what you wanted, it was fun to pretend' - that they sought comfort from each other, but it was not something that was meant to happen - that their feelings for each other are more complicated than friendship or romantic love. They could have conversation or she could shatter his feelings before he rolls over and goes back to sleep - he probably feels more for her than she for him. She probably has poor self-image that he's playing on, and hurting her the way she's hurt him in the past. If they're friends it makes sense that he's talking about everything going up in flames, because you can't always go back from sleeping with a friend. So he's made her feel worthless by telling her he used her body, even when he feels a lot more, but he also shows her how safe he can make her feel - like a last ditch attempt to prove he's worth it. those are the things we do just to stay alive and feel wanted and loved. I think :)

Love in a Vacuum
'Til Tuesday
Well, in my opinion this song is about being a young & maybe a little naive &/or introverted girl and finding yourself loving a man who is at first very charming, carefree & outgoing, and seems at first to be without limits, as in "There was a time you opened up every doorway you didn't mind if everything wasn't your way" then that man starts to gradually become more introverted & shows their more possessive/obsessive side to you as the relationship progresses, even while they keep up the appearance of being carefree & outgoing to everyone else, "Don't pull away that goes against what you told me I look in your eyes I realize what you've sold me is love in a vacuum" so you confront them about the way they're acting and of course they deny it, "I think you've changed but you insist that that's not true" quite possibly they are an addict of some sort, my guess would be cocaine, &/or showing very obsessive behavior towards you (early on in the video for this song we see the man hanging a picture up, it is a very large portrait of Aimee & it is prominently displayed in his/their apartment for the duration of the song), thus their "love in a vacuum", "You look so strange, so distant that you're hardly you Now I can see how you have been acting different You say it's me but I know that it isn't it's love in a vacuum" but still you are in love with them and don't want to leave them and you know that they are truly in love with you and they don't want you to leave them either, maybe they are convinced you can save them from themself, maybe they are so broken that the possibility of an overdose &/or suicide attempt is very real and you want to get through to them that their behavior not only dangerous but it is also just pissing you off and if they don't wise up they run the risk of loosing you, as in the lines "You will be lonely if you leave me alone", so you want to save them but can't get through to them due to the addiction &/or emotional problems they have, "Love in a vacuum and that's not enough love in a vacuum You will be lonely you'll be the only one who feels this way You will be lonely if you leave me alone You will be lonely you'll be the only one who feels this way it's just not enough" you want them to understand that the love they are giving you is not enough when it is filtered through the vacuum of their drug addiction &/or emotional impairment, "You will be lonely you'll be the only one who feels this way it's just not enough and just wait you will be lonely Love in a vacuum Love in a vacuum and that's not enough Love in a vacuum". 'Love In A Vacuum' for me is a hauntingly truthful acute argument on the loneliness of obsession and almost inevitable loss of love that follows people who are broken in some way or another; the obsessives, the coke heads, the drunks, addicts or the just-plain-old emotionally broken; a razor sharp, lyrically driven, deceptively poppy, yet ultimately-depressing-in-the-best-way song. Quintessential Aimee Mann.

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
