I Love Creedence Lyrics
best friend of Elodie Eye
we've been tight since Percy Elementary
class of 1985
we moved together out to Philly after college
took a two bedroom at South & 9th
I sold my violin so we could have it easy
El got her grandmother's money when she died
& split our ballgowns at the seams
& every single time I'd dream
it was only El & me
but then she slipped away from me
she met a boy from New Jersey
& they fell fast in love of course
I swear it felt like a divorce
& El's the only one besides my dad
who's ever said I love you Creedence
it's an hour on the bus each way
typing letters for a lawyer in a bad toupee
it's dumb I know but it pays okay
I got my own place off of South
& I've been living hand to mouth
for going on a year by now
& yes I still see El around
it's different but I can't say how
she cut her hair it's back to brown
she's living with her boyfriend now
she's still the only one besides my dad
who's ever said I love you Creedence

Definitely from the perspective of a girl. It's a love song in the sense of it being about pure, childhood love unadulterated by sex. They were as thick as thieves and the girl gets a boyfriend and it completely changes the friendship.
Creedance has a harder time of moving on, and there are lesbian undertones. You can really feel the raw pain. I've always thought that losing a friend is much harder than a lover. Friendship seems more genuine to me and not confounded by physical interaction.
Of course "El is the only besides my dad who has said I love you Creedance" is heartbreaking and what initially drew me to the song. Creedance has only loved one person in her life - and that has been diluted by distance and time.
i totally agree that there are definitely lesbian undertones. people get freaked out by unconventional songs and make them about whatever they want with the guise of "my personal interpretation" AKA their mistake that they refuse to believe otherwise in.

Actually, this is from a girl's perspective. Elodie and Creedence are just best friends, probably like sisters. I don't think it's a romantic thing at all; just the pain of losing a best friend to change and growing up. And Creedence never finds someone that fills that void.

this song is a reference to another musician/song. Creedence Clearwater (Revival) and their song Lodi. The 'girls' name isnt Elodie, its spelled out as L-o-d-i. When looking at the lyrics to Lodi, it all kinda goes together, namely the chorus being "I'm stuck in Lodi again". Basically, how I take it is that Creedence loves his friend Lodi, doesn't make a move, but is basically stuck on this one part of his life. It's only after he is stuck on Lodi he is able to move on with his life by getting a different job, moving to his own place, etc. Thats just my take on it though.

I'm still almost certain that Creedence is a woman. I disagree about being a male name, because I knew a girl in middle school named Creedence.

No, it doesn't imply romantic feelings. It actually implies lack of romantic feelings, to me. All that lyric is saying is that it had as much of an emotional impact on her as a divorce would. Saying, "I swear, ___" sounds like trying to convince someone of something that might be a little unbelievable, like a friend leaving you being the equivilant of a husband leaving you.
It does matter, because the song is about losing a friend, and I think it kind of cheapens it to imply that it's just another love lost story.
Anyway, the only reason I made the first comment on here is because I actually saw Casiotone live and before he played this he explained what the song was about, so I know this for a fact.

Yeah, I know who Creedence are, but I don't think this song has much to do with them. Except for the fact that this guy's parents named him after a band.

I've enjoyed the male/female debate on here, but I myself was first drawn in by the song through his clever play on words. While the Creedence Clearwater Wright/Revival part is obvious, Elodie's name is also a play on a song by CCR, "Lodi (Low-Die)" or L-O-D-I. Those two lines really made me listen to this song (about 100 times) and the rest of the album. It's like Magnetic Fields meets Beat Happening (the girl's singing/lo-fi) with the Tom Waits-y song for good measure (number 11). Good stuff.

3RA1N1AC, thanks!. That provides a new twist, I'll have to have a listen. This guy's wordplay is phenomenal, especially when it comes to referencing other bands. He does a similar thing in "Toby, Take A Bow", but with the Smiths. And I often wonder if "Jeane, If You're Ever In Portland" is another Smith's reference.

..Creedence is a girl, best friends with Elodie and they've been best friends since small. They move and go to college together untill Elodie Gets a New Boyfriend and takes her away from Creedence. Creedence starts getting all these emotions, and realizes that she might have loved Elodie more than a friend. she's the only one thats ever said she loved her besides her dad. I love this song, it lets me know theres still innocence out there
This is always how I've interpreted the song too.

I always imagined it as being spelled out, "Best friend of L-O-D-I"...or maybe Elle O-D-I. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't he mention an Eleanor in several other songs?
God this song kills me. In a good way.
