So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Saw you walking on your velvet lawn
Is it lonely on the moon?
You took a dive and swallowed all you could
Did you drink too much too soon?
Nothing left for you to fight about
And no one wants to see you try
The nearest neighbours are a mile away
Does the ocean hear you cry?
Punching at the sky
They say the King is losin´ his grip again
They said you´re bullet proof, they said you feel no pain
It seems the hero is misunderstood again
Is it love or is it surgery
Makes her seem so ill at ease
As she´s begging you to please calm down
In her silk Armani on her knees
Did you carry out those threats I heard
Or were you only playing macho?
And the stains on her Versace scarf
Were they really just Gazpacho?
They say the King is watching his back again
They say the King is losing his grip again
Raging like a bull to an empty ring
D´you think they will forgive a hero anything?
Now the ring is just a band of gold
And your wife needs police protection
While you´re sparring with the journalists
You´re trying to win back her affection
Is this what it means to be a man
Boxing up all your emotion
So now she´s gone and you´re alone at last
You can tell it to the ocean
They say the King is losing his grip again
They say the King is countin´ his numbered days
You never lost a fight in your whole life
You never had no trouble sleepin´ through the night
The bottle and the doctor get you through the day
The boys who run the house´ll make it all okay
You think they will forgive a hero anything
Maybe Hollywood
But maybe then again
Now the ring is just a band of gold
Drive the road
Is it lonely on the moon?
You took a dive and swallowed all you could
Did you drink too much too soon?
Nothing left for you to fight about
And no one wants to see you try
The nearest neighbours are a mile away
Does the ocean hear you cry?
Punching at the sky
They say the King is losin´ his grip again

The beginning of this track starting with some faint speaking. The first part is quite difficult to pick out, though it includes what is apparantly John Lennon saying "i found myself looking at halucinatory images of my face, changing and becoming cosmic".
The full opening goes as follows:
"Ladies and gentlemen in attendance, and boxing fans joining us around the world, it's show time! The Heavyweight Championship of the World..."
"Even as a child. I would find myself seeing hallucinatory images of my face changing and becoming cosmic and complete..."
"The house is surrounded by helicopters..."
The first part ("Ladies and gentlemen...") is apparantly a reference to Mike Tyson and Jake la Motta.
The second part ("Even as a child...") is John Lennon, and is apparantly a reference to an interview he did where he said that "Surrealism to me is reality. Psychic vision to me is reality. Even as a child. When I looked at myself in the mirror or when I was 12, 13, I used to literally trance out into alpha. I didn't know what it was called then. I found out years later there is a name for those conditions. But I would find myself seeing hallucinatory images of my face changing and becoming cosmic and complete. It caused me to always be a rebel. This thing gave me a chip on the shoulder; but, on the other hand, I wanted to be loved and accepted. Part of me would like to be accepted by all facets of society and not be this loudmouthed lunatic musician. But I cannot be what I am not."
The third part ("The house is surrounded...") is also a reference to John Lennon, though it was apparantly Phil Spector who said the line: Startled, Lennon gasped: "What are you talking about?" Suddenly Phil cried: "The house is surrounded by helicopters. They're trying to get them!"
I'd love somebody to tell me what relevance this lot has upon Gazpacho!
Have no idea what this track has to do with cold Spanish soup, which is what Gazpacho actually is?!! This is a great track however, which I think is pretty much written about the price of fame? That's my take on it anyway, maybe the reference to Gazpacho is the disappointment of cold soup perhaps?
There is a great deal of materialism in this song, designer clothes etc., which are just Gazpacho, cold soup, nothing special really, don't mean anything, also many references to the media and the lies they spread trying to destroy individuals ...basically fame isn't all it's cracked up to be.
About men who beat up women, hence the references to Mike Tyson and John Lennon who are both known for being violent towards women. She has bloodstains on her scarf, and somebody's asked about it and it's been covered up by the excuse 'it's just a bit of gazpacho'.
This is one of my favorite songs on "AoS".
"Gazpacho" is a cold soup. While I agree that this song is about powerful men who abuse women, I think the title and track makes specific reference to the O.J. Simpson murders. The title refers to the quote "revenge is a dish best served cold", since Gazpacho is also a "cold" soup, this makes sense. I also agree that since Gazpacho is generally reddish brown in color, references that others have made also makes sense as an excuse for stains on clothing (in a general sense for woman who are abused). O.J.'s revenge on his former wife and boyfriend, was certainly "cold". Other references give hint to this, "Drive the road", "you think they will forgive a hero anything".
