Well, in my opinion this song is about being a young & maybe a little naive &/or introverted girl and finding yourself loving a man who is at first very charming, carefree & outgoing, and seems at first to be without limits, as in
"There was a time
you opened up every doorway
you didn't mind if everything
wasn't your way"
then that man starts to gradually become more introverted & shows their more possessive/obsessive side to you as the relationship progresses, even while they keep up the appearance of being carefree & outgoing to everyone else,
"Don't pull away
that goes against what you told me
I look in your eyes
I realize what you've sold me
is love in a vacuum"
so you confront them about the way they're acting and of course they deny it,
"I think you've changed
but you insist that
that's not true"
quite possibly they are an addict of some sort, my guess would be cocaine, &/or showing very obsessive behavior towards you (early on in the video for this song we see the man hanging a picture up, it is a very large portrait of Aimee & it is prominently displayed in his/their apartment for the duration of the song), thus their "love in a vacuum",
"You look so strange, so distant
that you're hardly you
Now I can see
how you have been acting different
You say it's me
but I know
that it isn't
it's love in a vacuum"
but still you are in love with them and don't want to leave them and you know that they are truly in love with you and they don't want you to leave them either, maybe they are convinced you can save them from themself, maybe they are so broken that the possibility of an overdose &/or suicide attempt is very real and you want to get through to them that their behavior not only dangerous but it is also just pissing you off and if they don't wise up they run the risk of loosing you, as in the lines
"You will be lonely
if you leave me alone", so you want to save them but can't get through to them due to the addiction &/or emotional problems they have,
"Love in a vacuum
and that's not enough
love in a vacuum
You will be lonely
you'll be the only one who feels this way
You will be lonely
if you leave me alone
You will be lonely
you'll be the only one who feels this way
it's just not enough"
you want them to understand that the love they are giving you is not enough when it is filtered through the vacuum of their drug addiction &/or emotional impairment,
"You will be lonely
you'll be the only one who feels this way
it's just not enough
and just wait
you will be lonely
Love in a vacuum
Love in a vacuum
and that's not enough
Love in a vacuum".
'Love In A Vacuum' for me is a hauntingly truthful acute argument on the loneliness of obsession and almost inevitable loss of love that follows people who are broken in some way or another; the obsessives, the coke heads, the drunks, addicts or the just-plain-old emotionally broken; a razor sharp, lyrically driven, deceptively poppy, yet ultimately-depressing-in-the-best-way song.
Quintessential Aimee Mann.
Then when you let it
You asked for nothing
Why don't you share it?
All of the time you live
There's something out there
This one will know how far to live on
This one won't ever know in this town
And in the red room at a distance
How would you know it?
You're the same when you're living
I don't know it, it won't be this
This one will know how far to live on
This one will know how far to live on
All of the time you wait, there's someone out there
And no one can find all the red
How would you show it?
You can see through the red
How I know it, it won't be this time
This one will know how far to live on
This one will know how far to live on
You asked for nothing
Why don't you share it?
All of the time you live
There's something out there
This one will know how far to live on
This one won't ever know in this town
And in the red room at a distance
How would you know it?
You're the same when you're living
I don't know it, it won't be this
This one will know how far to live on
This one will know how far to live on
All of the time you wait, there's someone out there
And no one can find all the red
How would you show it?
You can see through the red
How I know it, it won't be this time
This one will know how far to live on
This one will know how far to live on

Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's.

This song is def a twin to "Unfair" (a song she has been quoted as saying is about falling in love with someone who is already in a relationship) so it is presumably about the same person. Given the references to buying an apartment and not being able to see her love interest "after tonight," it's most likely that she's moving away and she'll "wait a day to break the bad news" (i.e. notifying him that she's leaving once she's already gone).
And, of course, the fact that she sees in him a fellow "idealist" and "dreamer" (terms commonly given to people with the INFP personality on the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)) portends that she'll always be left wondering if they would've been perfect together.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
Mountain Song

Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
this song has the sweetest bassline in the history of bass guitar
hell yeah it does.
those lyrics are totally fucking wrong. they're cryptic because they make no sense grammatically.
i love this song even if it reminds me of the person i fell in love with that im not with anymore... how we were pulling out of a gas station, how this song was playing in his radio and how he looked over at me and clapped along with this song, to make me smile.
Follow-up: The repetitive claps in the song might possibly involve the theme of 'synchronization' (people clapping hands together) -- continuous attempts by this guy/girl to 'synchronize' the real personality of his/her ex and the emulated personality of the 'persona'. Such attempts at synchronization could partly comprise the effort of extrapolating this 'persona' of his/her ex from past memories of him/her, as well as the effort of integrating the 'persona' into new personal experiences. These efforts could ensure the survival of the 'persona' as a semi-living entity rather than a dead (inanimate) memory.
The monotony and precise rhythm of the clapping could (but I am not sure) possibly be a depiction of the synthetic/mechanical/unnatural nature of these attempts to create a semi-living thing (the 'persona') from past (semi-dead) memories of the ex-boyfriend/girlfriend.
The song title itself, "stars and sons", might be a reference to the above idea of 'creation', which is similar to the creation of stars from disparate matter, or the creation of children from disparate biological matter.
The fluid and wave-like 'in-out' melody of the bass line might be a reference to intercourse and procreation. Interestingly, the song seems to refer not just to actual intercourse and procreation, but seems to extrapolate these processes onto psychology (intermixing/conjoining of ideological substances/artifacts; creation of personas). Thus, it seems to mirror the necessity of physiological and cosmological sexuality (involving the physical body and the physical matter of stellar material) with a similar level of necessity for metaphysical and psychological sexuality (involving the mind, vis the creation of the hypothetical 'persona' from the raw material of information/memories/thoughts/feelings).
I don't know why no one has commented on this. I hope you are still active on here. This is the most amazing and in depth analysis I have read. I hope you have written more. I feel like a stuttering fan coming face to face with a celebrity trying to reply to this. You truly have an uncanny ability to dissect every element of a song. I am just in awe. Thank you for your contribution.
This is the most, or one of the most, ridiculous things I have ever read.
Well, BSS is my favorite band and I've listened to them and this song hundreds of times and I always felt the explanation was simple~ You don't know where life is taking you or where you're supposed to go. You always wonder if the right person has already come and gone out of your life or if they're the next one you meet. Red is passion, sin, life, action, excitement. You feel like it hasn't happened, but the road to it is in fact the red room all along and the people you meet and love don't have the answer, you do.
Basically: Life is not an equation or problem to be figured out. Life is a confusing journey full of realizations and changes. Nothing is definite except death (and that is unpredictable)
This song makes me want to clap.... I Like it! I'm not sure what the meaning of it is, yet. Something about seeing the red; Very metaphoric, and a feeling unknown.
i agree the bassline is very addictive. this is the song that turned me on to broken social scene. its great. i especially like the vocals on this song.
i don't think people are supposed to figure out this song, it's very vague.
You're damn right, this has to be the sweetest bassline ever. this is a song about life and is very accordingly vague, just like life is. One of the greatest songs I've ever heard.
the clapping is the coolest thing in the world
This song, Oh God, it's one of the best songs i've heard in my life , the base line is sooo damn catchy! and that solo is crazy i've never heard anything like it ... almost crimes is another good song from BSS. i can totally interpret this song with my relationship, specially the first verse, but that's just me!
