All The Nasties Lyrics

If it came to pass that they should ask
What could I tell them
Would they criticize behind my back
Maybe I should let them
Oh if only then and only then
They would understand
They'd turn a full-blooded city boy
Into a full-blooded city man

If they could face it
I could take it in their eyes
Oh I know I'd make it
Their tiny minds
And sacred cows just fake it
If only then and only then
They would understand
They'd turn a full-blooded city boy
Into a full-blooded city man

But I know the way they want me
In the way they publicize
If they could turn their focus off
To the image in their eyes
Maybe it would help them, help them understand
Maybe it would help them, help them understand
Maybe it would help them, help them understand
That a full-blooded city boy
Is now a full-blooded city man

Oh my soul
Oh my soul
Oh my soul

What, yet another song about Elton's sexuality, can't you people think of anything else to write? For every ten people on here claiming Elton's writing about his homosexuality there's another ten reminding you that Bernie wrote the lyrics! Do you know so little about Elton John or do you really not care and are content to write any old crap? By the way, did I mention that BERNIE WROTE THE LYRICS?

@steeviec60 You're right, but don't forget he (Bernie) also wrote the lyrics to "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" which is absolutely about Elton attempting suicide after getting roped into an engagement with a woman he didn't love.

@steeviec60 Maybe you are not aware that John and Taupin were not just songwriting partners, they were a gay couple?

@steeviec60 they weren't a romantic couple though...

Well, I'll first tell you what the song is about. At first glance, you may miss the real meaning of the song. This song served as clue to Elton's sexuality. "If it came to pass that they should ask, What should I tell them? Would they criticize? ....."

This song is one of my favorites.

This was way before EJ came out of the closet. It is surprisingly a direct reference to his sexuality.

It's also about criticism as well. If you think about it, everyone tries to change you... the way you are. Media, friends, family, acquaintances, everyone basically, but you have destiny in your hands. This is your life. And screw 'em if they don't like it.

@auburnstar Fuck, i love this comment. :’)

Firstly, let's ASSUME the new movie "Rocketman" is accurate - and I think EJ was standing over the screenwriters, so it's reasonable to assume he would have set them on the right path. If so then the movie is about him making the bold move from a "full-blooded city boy, Into a full-blooded city man". It talks about Reggie Dwight reinventing himself. So I think this song is about his apprehension of his passage from boyhood to superstardom:. “I wish I was someone else,” he says early on, and then proceeds to reinvent himself, discarding Reggie Dwight and gradually morphing into Elton John. Bernie was, of course, closely involved, so he would have known about how Elton was putting himself out there, and I think he was writing about how Elton worked through the criticism. Should he just grow a thicker skin? Or answer the crickets, er critics.

I'm surprised there isn't more posts as well. The song is much more beautiful when you know what it's about. I agree with kylebedient's post.

In actual fact i think it was bernie taupin(heterosexual) who wrote the lyrical score to this song and not elton himself. As i recall at the time EJ and BT went on record saying that this song was a reaction to certain small minded and negative comments being made in the press.Neither of them mentioned anything at all to do with sexual taboos.Elton even briefly mentions this on YOU TUBE (beginning of - all the nasties, live).

I think people should look beyond what they see before their eyes, and think with their heart instead.
