I sink into the wall,
And staring up I saw,
I'm alone in all my thoughts,
Too afraid to be crazy I run,
It always finds me driving right through town,
With the windows down I fly,
It's the feeling spring has brought,
But an eye for the winter's what I got,
It always finds me...

So tonight,
When I left here,
All I said was goodbye and that's alright,
No, "I'll see you later,"
I've been trying my whole life,
And if it's an eye for an eye why can't I get this right,
I'm too slow to go fast,
I'm too nervous to do that,
So I run, run away why should I...

I take my chances slow,
After all it's no one's fault,
But the pain seems to crave my life,
So ashamed of my weakness I lie,
It always finds me...

So tonight,
When I left here,
All I said was goodbye and that's alright,
No, "I'll see you later,"
I've been trying my whole life,
And if it's an eye for an eye why can't I get this right,
I'm too slow to go fast,
I'm too nervous to do that,
So I run, run away why should I...

Why should I?
Why should I?
Why should I?

This song is awesome... I think it's about having trouble with relationships... spring makes him feel like he needs love... but winter makes him realize that he's alone... maybe trying too hard pushes girls away... but not trying enough pushes them away too... but in the end... you're still alone in your thoughts.

in john steinbeck's book "east of eden", the translation of the word "timshel" is disputed when it was being converted from hebrew to the king james version. timshel means "shalt", which conveys predestination and it made the lead character feel like he had no choice to conquer what wasn't good. i don't know why else the word timshel would be chosen for the title, so it must have something to do with the plot of the song.

    ok i'm done :)

Maybe Ace is saying he feels everything he does and feels is predetermined.

"The pain, it seems to crave my life"

In this song, he's trying to figure out what his fate is determined by, and why he tries to escape his problems when he knows it's impossible because he knows that it's already been decided he will feel that emotion at that time.

    "It always finds me."

They're all in his head, then it's like packing all his troubles in his suitcase with his other things and taking it with him.

Ace is obviously a big believer in destiny.

His lyrics are simple and catchy but always have a story behind them and they manage to go so deep.

:) That's what I love about Arthur Enders.

He's also thinking.. "Why should I run away from everything? I can face this and then it's gone."

he knows that he's eventually going to hurt, winter always finds him. he can accept it, but he cant put himself to live by the rules "an eye for an eye" he has to much love and compation. yet he holds in his pain, all of his emotions. he knows he's eventually going to get hurt.

Actually, timshel in the book is about every individual having the choice to be good or evil in their live. At least, that's how I understood it. It's pretty much the opposite of predestination. If the song is an allegory to the book, it seems likely that he compares himself to Adam, the main character, who throughout his life is hit with major tragedies that he can't seem to escape, yet still manages to forgive his son for killing his other song and in turn Adam himself, because his son can still choose to be a good person. It seems like it represents those amazing people who have lost so much but still seem to go on and have faith in people.

"its the feeling spring has brought, but an eye for the winter's what i got, it always finds me..."

He finds happiness, but always seems to end up in darker circumstances. Yet, he still just sees it like "I'll get better soon" ("No, I'll see you later").

Ace Enders is a freaking genius. I loved this song way before I read the book, and although I had to read all freakin 600 pages for school, it made me love it.

ps. A friend of mine says that timshel is like "agency" in the Mormon faith.

Funny, I never thought of this song as an uplifting one. From the first time I heard it a few years ago, I always thought it was about suicide. That may be due in part to the overwhelming number of songs out ther about that, but that's what I always took it as.

"I Sink into the wall and staring up I saw I'm alone in all my thoughts, too afraid to be crazy I run, it always finds me" I always pictured this as a guy at a party perhaps, not the life of the party, more along the lines of a wallflower, and he's kind of just sitting there, thinking and his thoughts get intese so he leaves in the hope of leaving all that behind.

"so tonight, when i left here, all i said was goodbye and thats alright, no i'll see you later'"

I always interpreted that to be along the lines of, he's just fed up. And hes sick of dealing with all of these thoughts and of feeling so alone, so he sys goodbye, no "i'll see you later," because 'i've been trying my whole life' it seems to me like this is where he gives up, he's tried for so long and he just can't anymore.

"if it's an eye for an eye" That lead me to think that perhaps someone broke his heart. And he's been trying for so long to move on and everything, that he's tired and he's going to do what he feels he needs, as they did.

"why should i?" always seemed to me like, why should I continue when I've been trying my whole life and it's not getting any easier...why should i? I think we've all asked ourselves at one point or another,

why should i? Why Should I?!
