its amazing how far music can come.. 24 years after it released and its one of the most heartfelt songs ive heard
Lately I've been feeling different
Like I've come from outer space.
Had I known there's something missing,
When it's you I can't replace
As I walk into the Sun!
As I stare across this ocean!
As I start a brand-new day!
My life never be the same, again.
Look ahead there in the distance
Shadows coming through the haze.
You're the only one that listens
To help me break loose from these chains.
As I walk into the sun!
As I stare across this ocean!
As I start a brand-new day!
My live never be the same, again.
(the same again)
Aa-aa-aa-aa(singing)
And as I walk into the sun!
And as I stare across this ocean!
And as I start a brand-new day!
My live ever be the same again!
(repeat)
(repeat)

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.
These lyrics are incorrent in some places, and they don't even have some of the lines in them. Here's a rewrite:
Lately I've been feelin' different Like I've come from outer space And I notice somethin' missin' When it's you I can't replace
And I've been drownin' out the silence From the words that we once said And I know I could make a difference If I could get inside your head
And as I walk into the sun And as I stare across this ocean And as I start a brand new day Will my life ever be the same again
And up ahead they're in the distance The shadows comin' through the haze You're the only one that listens To help me break loose from these chains
And as I walk into the sun And as I stare across this ocean And as I start a brand new day Will my life ever be the same again
The same again
And as I walk into the sun And as I stare across this ocean And as I start a brand new day Will my life ever be the same again
And as I walk into the sun And as I stare across this ocean And as I start a brand new day Will my life ever be the same again
And as I walk into the sun And as I stare across this ocean And as I start a brand new day Will my life ever be the same again
I think this song is about feelings that come with some drugs... Ecstacy especially can allow for unhindered internal self-examination, and I think he's saying that he realizes that he's been "feeding his mind" when he should be feeding his heart - "I notice something missing...it's you I can't replace." This means to me that he's missing a woman and trying to fill the hole with drugs, maybe.
"I start a brand new day...I felt we'd be the same again..." - he's trying to move on from an addiction, but somewhere he knows he'll go back.
I think this is also about how his love will help him escape the chains of addiction. But he thinks he'll never be able to go back, even though it seemed like "we'd be the same, again."
Maybe this was a little incoherent but it's a start.
Reinvention and new things to come, I can't pin down what it means to me, but when I hear it, I feel refreshed and not alone. It can mean so much, to different people. For me, it's about God "Up ahead there in the distance shadows coming through the haze you're the only one that listens.. to help me break loose from these chains, "
and
"and i notice something missing when it's you i can't replace "
I tried to replace God with a girlfriend one time, needless to say things didn't go well.
On the other hand, I think of the new direction my life's about to take "And as i walk into the sun... and as i stare across this ocean... and as i start a brand new day... "
The King Unique Remix is incredible!
This is a great lil tune. As I stare across the ocean...realizing that we are small cogs on a great planet. Lets hope we stop the war
i love this song. its like, a thinking song. i like how they hold out all the last words of the chorus, sounds cool.
"but i felt we'd be the same, again. "
Thia sounds nothing like the song. To me, it sounds like "Will my life ever be the same, again?" I'm not sure about the lyrics posted here. The number of syllables isn't even right.
Thank you for posting the correct lyrics, magus. I was reading them and wondering about that. I really do love this song. I listen to it a lot at night and it gives me a bit more energy. Some days, I remember a good friend of mine and how we're going to be separated by life and college and the changes that will happen. Other times, I compare it to the Buddhist concept of change and attempting to live in the present moment. I also tried to look for what the band officially said about the song and couldn't find anything...does anyone know anything about that?
If you watch the music video, it might give some perspective on this song.

I feel that the song isn't so limited, and so dulled down to just a simple drug experience or an affair with a woman. I see it on a much broader spectrum-the mechanics of society and humans themselves. How we act to one another, and the repercussions of those actions.

The way I see it, its about the choices we make in life that lead us to exerperiance other peoples views and re-evaluate our own.
