So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
When you said tulips
I knew that you're mine
When I caught you there
Crying in the night
Wearing my jacket
Wearing that smile
I knew that I'd found you
This could be an opportunity
Were you unawares?
Did it catch you out?
Or did it break you in
Right from the start?
It's as pure as fire
It's as pure as snow
I knew that I'd found you
This could be an opportunity
If you promise to let it
If you promise to let it grow
Cause you're the one I love
I knew that you're mine
When I caught you there
Crying in the night
Wearing my jacket
Wearing that smile
I knew that I'd found you
This could be an opportunity
Were you unawares?
Did it catch you out?
Or did it break you in
Right from the start?
It's as pure as fire
It's as pure as snow
I knew that I'd found you
This could be an opportunity
If you promise to let it
If you promise to let it grow
Cause you're the one I love

I agree, it's just about relationships and the little things you do, little fragments of really specific things you remember so clearly just cos it meant a lot to you - I'm sure most can remember a glimpse of someone they were with ("when I saw you there ... I knew that I'd found you") which made them rrealise how much that person meant to them. The first verse at least is definatly for the little things like that.
Was wondering if tulips specifically had a meaning and found this on Wiki: "Tulips cannot be grown in the open in tropical climates, as they require a cold winter season to grow successfully. Manipulation of the tulip's growing temperature can, however, allow growers to "force" tulips to flower earlier than they normally would." there's bound to be something in there but I can't drag anything out right now.
Whill, you are so right.
Hey, "The Knave". Shut up, no one cares about your stupid jacket. It's shit.
Everyone else, keep posting! Great stuff!! :)!!!
Without sounding confrontational ''The Knave'' I doubt your all that hard mate, you spend your spare time on a lyrics message board and carry round allergy medication and knives I doubt girls will be missing out by not wearing your jacket
possibly one of the best love songs in modern history.
This song is so amazing, it sort of makes me high. it's hard to explain.
this song is so amazing -I don't use that word for ordinary, cheap things- it sort of makes me high. I don't know, it's hard to explain. Whill, you made me smile.
Tulips symbolize perfect love.
