This song is def a twin to "Unfair" (a song she has been quoted as saying is about falling in love with someone who is already in a relationship) so it is presumably about the same person. Given the references to buying an apartment and not being able to see her love interest "after tonight," it's most likely that she's moving away and she'll "wait a day to break the bad news" (i.e. notifying him that she's leaving once she's already gone).
And, of course, the fact that she sees in him a fellow "idealist" and "dreamer" (terms commonly given to people with the INFP personality on the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)) portends that she'll always be left wondering if they would've been perfect together.

I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

My friends used to laugh at me for liking this song. I still think it's one of the greatest songs ever recorded. I don't even think the west or cowboys are cool, this song is just that good, it makes me look past the obvious ridiculousness of a half-black brit singing about cowboys and riding bulls and all that.
I think the meaning of this song is pretty clear: Phil Lynot wants to be a cowboy. Yes, the lyrics are a little silly, but when that second guitar solo comes in, I crap my pants every time.
one of my favourites too, a band i was in used to cover this/boys are back in town, like on live n dangerous, it was well fun to play. and you know he's irish because on live n dangerous at one point he says something like "any girls in the audience got any irish in em?....would you like a little more?"

Phil Lynott may have been born in Birmingham put that doesn't mean he was English. He said so himself he considered himself Irish in every way. Phil Lynott is IRELAND and thats that. By the way unreal song tha live and dangerous version is one the greatest songs of all time('',)
