Harmony Lyrics
Haven't seen your face for a while
Have you quit doing time for me
Or are you still the same spoiled child
Is this the only place you thought to go
Am I the only man you ever had
Or am I just the last surviving friend that you know
We're pretty good company
Looking for an island
In our boat upon the sea
Harmony, gee I really love you
And I want to love you forever
And dream of the never, never, never leaving harmony
Open up your heart and let your feelings flow
You're not unlucky knowing me
Keeping the speed real slow
In any case I set my own pace
By stealing the show, say hello, hello

The quest for harmony in the collaboration of songwriting between Elton John and Bernie Taupin - in the form of Harmony being a fickle female who can't be counted on for her consistency. Noting that she is "not unlucky knowing me, keeping the speed real slow...stealing the show". They both win when they collaborate.
There is a search for partnership here. Elton and Bernie are in need of a unifying solution to the problem of being scorned. In their own right, both had been misled in believing that they had a solid friendship in a woman. But she cast them out to uncertain waters.

Alright I will take a stab at it:
Elton said: "Blocked? Wondering where this is all leading? Not always happy with your role???! Well, here is what I recommend, write a song from MY POINT OF VIEW!! I don't know the future. I want fame much worse than YOU do! I can't wait, I am more impatient, and I don't always know how to do it, what if you are the only writer I knew? Why am I the only singer you know???" Or something like that, you get the idea.
So Bernie wrote a song from Elton's POV, calling Bernie up and wondering if the writing is going to stop. Lost sometimes. Lonely sometimes. But always with the harmony, always with the music. Apparently Bernie may have asked Elton at some point "do you need me like I need you?"
And this was the result. What wonderful collaborators.
All in my humble opinion.

he seems so sarcastic during the verses, but in the chorus, the music soars up, and the boy reveals that his bitterness is only a front--
this is a naive sensitive boy, and he's unfortunately in love with a girl who uses him. he knows this, yet there remains this delusion that they could exist forever in love.
at the same time he doesn't want to seem vulnerable and at this girl's mercy, and he knows he's a sad pathetic fuck.

It's about Elton and Bernie's relationship with music in general. Their love for harmony and how they interact with music. Elton needs harmony but when he's on stage it's all about the show and his performance.

Don't know, am asking?

Here is a thought. Elton is facing an ex lover who left him brokenhearted. Elton dreamt of a paradise with that person (never never land?) but it went down the toilet and it turned out that the lover was just a spoiled child not ready for serious commitments (based on the other sarcastic elements in the lyrics). Still, he seems to have second thoughts (and love remaining) now that the person returns to see him, provided the person is ready to open up his/her heart and take a slow start at finding each other once more. Anyway, good "harmonies" throughout the song.

Love this song everything about it is great any way I would agree with the comment above mine.

Such a beautiful song

this is a slightly dumb question....but is Harmony the girl's name or harmony as in...peace?

I love this song. I don't dance to this song like that. Just kiddin! Call me :).
