Hear the voice of the bard:
The present, past, and future sees.
His ears have heard the holy word,
And walked among the ancient trees
Calling the lapsed soul,
And weeping in the evening dew,
And might control the starry pole
And fallen, fallen, light renew.
Oh earth, oh earth return,
Arise from out the dewy grass.
The night is worn, and the morn
Rises from the slumberous mass.
Turn away no more.
Why will thou turn away the starry floor?
The watch, be sure,
Is given thee ‘til the break of day.
‘Til the break of day,
‘Til the break of day,
‘Til the break of day,
‘Til the break of day.

This is an unreleased track from the Joshua Tree era... It's in the "digital box set" on iTunes and the lyrics are from a poem by Blake.

This is an AMAZING song! i love the haunting feel and it makes me fall asleep everytime. Not really sure what the meaning of the song is though.

Sounds like: A Dying Sailor to His Shipmate, MLK

Praising "spirits of the dead"/ "ghosts" WHICH ARE REALLY DEMONS, trying to contact them, talking to them, singing to them, etc. is SPIRITISM. The True God Jehovah-Yahweh HATES spiritism. It is an unrighteous "siding" with his enemy Satan, and his likewise evil spirit hordes. God's words strongly CONDEMN human involvement with any form of spiritism. (Please see Deuteronomy 18:9-13; 1Corinthians 10:20-22) God also WARNS humans to stay away from spiritism for their own safety and well being too. Once humans become involved with spiritism, demons ("ghosts"/ "spirits of the dead") can progressively disturb, terrorize, torment, cause mental and physical sickness and harm to, and even kill their victims. So, NO "GHOST" (demon) is beautiful! Come Armageddon Day (soon), Jehovah-Yahweh will not let persons found practicing spiritism live through it. No one practicing spiritism will be allowed to be part of God's kingdom, either in heaven or on earth. (Revelation 22:15 Galatians 5:19-20) Surely the persons of this band are capable of writing a song about history, memories, stars, trees, music, seas, and timeless things, etc. without resorting to elements of spiritism.

thersa1... what about a common name for the 3rd member of the trinity, the holy spirit (a.k.a the holy ghost)? i always assumed that was what this song was about, the HS prodding people back from the brink, though i do so detest people forcing religious interpretations on others. as an aside, i really love bono's voice in this song/recital/thingy

aha, and yet the scriptures frequently mention the "spirit of God" do they not? the pentacost, Jesus' Baptism? These are taken from the bible that three of the 4 members of U2 follow, though they don't adhere to any particular denomination. and just to clarify, i meant religious interpretation of song, not religious songs themselves. it may be about an early morning....intimate experiance between Bono and his wife for all i know. how simply listening to such a song would condemn the masses to permanent damnation is beyond me. I also apologise to any others on this page who couldnt care less about our little tiff. cheerio

Could I please point out to you lot, before you lynch Bono, Adam Clayton, The Edge and Larry Mullin Jr and have them burnt at the stake, that the heart of man is not yours to Judge.

While Jimmy Swaggart may have preached many a fine sermon, many of YOU thought yourselves uplifted and empowered with the Spirit of God. While the Reverend Jim Jones preached purity and the teachings of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, many of YOU adorned him and said him to be a man of God. While Jim and Tammy Baker encouraged you to listen to that Still Small Voice, many of YOU were sending them money.

While you sit there in armchair judgement of these four men, just consider, for a moment, after having pointed out the very sharks within your OWN CHURCHES, what truly HOPELESS JUDGES of CHARACTER you really are.

Finally, with the measure you use to judge others, you also will be judged.

The lyrics are the introduction to William Blake's "Songs of Experience" poems. It's about eternity and creation and God and the Earth and man. Blake also wrote poems called "Songs of Innocence" to which the songs of experience are a counterpoint.

The eerie, naked, ethereal sound throughout the song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Bono's voice--so low and calm to begin with and then how he crescendos into "till the break of day, till the break of day, till the break of day..." is lovely.

Fantastic, Mr."Context." That will be quite fine. Here's the "MEASURE": By biblical standards, as per God Almighty, I'll be judged righteous. BY THOSE SAME BIBLICAL STANDARDS, persons unrepentantly staying with the very ANTI-SCRIPTURAL spiritual (demon-inspired, typical-of-antichrist "Christendom") LIES you here publically FIGHT God with WILL SOON DIE FOR (as in dead forever - killed by the God and Christ you PROFANE). EZEKIEL 3:17-21. You are certainly MISSING this BASIC principle of scriptural, Divine JUSTICE regarding the delivery of WARNINGS FROM GOD. What I have spoken were God's own already-made, scriptural JUDGMENT-WARNING MESSAGES. However, such messages - which are being, as prophesied, put out to the world by Christ's TRUE disciples/ Jehovah's TRUE worshipers (so very much in contrast to FALSE disciples/ FALSE worshipers) are being shown the HATE and disbargement that they (and speakers of them) were prophesied to receive by the bulk-mass of actually very UNSPIRITUAL (dishonest-hearted, animalistic, false-prided, etc.) persons. Your reaction is certainly not different from that - and is highly TYPICAL of that which I have received from FALSE "Christian" and other anti-scriptural, antichrist Bono-copying (and even worse?) U2 IDOLATERS over the past seven years.

There will be MUCH DEATH FROM GOD coming onto this world's IDOLATERS/ FALSE religionists very soon. I really do believe that their will be a substantial amount of them, killed dead forever by a rightly enraged God, among the MANY SELF-DESIRE-FIRST (no matter what God says), LIE-LOVING Bono/ U2 IDOLATERS.

And do notice - your Bono god isn't sounding that very urgent SCRIPTURAL WARNING AT ALL - neither do his groups of IDOLATERS PERMIT IT. No, no, no - evidently, all Bono wants is tho EXTORT people's spiritual drive to support his monetarty/ material "social justice" efforts. WAKE UP.

Worship God and obey HIM (and his Son) and put your trust in the future in THEIR Kingdom ~OR~ WORSHIP BONO and follow HIS COUNTER-GOD (and antichrist) ways to "change the world" via man - YOU CAN'T DO BOTH.

Word Alive, The
This song is def a twin to "Unfair" (a song she has been quoted as saying is about falling in love with someone who is already in a relationship) so it is presumably about the same person. Given the references to buying an apartment and not being able to see her love interest "after tonight," it's most likely that she's moving away and she'll "wait a day to break the bad news" (i.e. notifying him that she's leaving once she's already gone). And, of course, the fact that she sees in him a fellow "idealist" and "dreamer" (terms commonly given to people with the INFP personality on the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)) portends that she'll always be left wondering if they would've been perfect together.

Techno Ted
Audioslave
Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
