I prayed heaven today
Would bring its hammer down on me
And pound you out of my head
I can't think with you in it

I dragged all that I owned down a dirt road
To find you my shoes worn out and used
They can't take me much farther

Something always takes the place

Of missing pieces

you can take and put together even though
You know there's something missing

The sun burned a hole in my roof
I can't seem to fix it
I hope the rain doesn't come
And wash me down the gutter

She rides in a car like a queen on a card
And the guns of her mind aim a line
Straight at mine to a heart that was broke

tried to feel but got choked in the smoke of
A desert
A beach with no leisure a night that's so blue
Feed the aching in you and the background

Birds take a flight from the earth
Where the bonfire burns and the night
Current turns on a lifeboat floating
Down a river of sleep

I can't see her hollow eyes

I'm walking along with my boots full of rocks
I can't believe these tears were mine
I'll give them to you to put away in a box

Something always takes the place of
Missing pieces you can take and put
Together even though
You know there's something missing

Something always missing always
Someone missing something

haw haw haw! it's TREASURE, not leisure; also "i gave them to you to keep away in a box", not PUT in the box. all in all the meaning i think is utterly simple. brilliant, beautiful song, love the Air remix so much, too.

I love this song, Beck is such a genius. As others have noted, obviously about femme fatale.

But I think it's also about how broken people attract other broken people. The evil chick sounds like classic borderline personality type woman. They tend to attract people who are broken themselves. The title "Missing" refers to the fact that she had something missing, and so does this guy.

Whatever was missing in his life, he uses her to fill the gap. She screws him over and breaks his heart, and all he can do is feel hatred, self absorption and self pity.

"someone always missing something" - probably ever lover he had was missing something, just like him.

The perfect music video for this would be cartoon type anima who are each missing something, finding each other, than someone else, than someone else, and on and on. Every character would be missing a piece, borrowing from each new person they came across, then losing a new piece, etc.

i can totally relate to this song! it's a great song, probably my favorite song in the cd. This cd is focused really well; in this case, a Mexican feel to the theme. I can imagine this worn out man wandering through the barren desert looking for the femme fatale who broke his heart.

The way he sings it is so strange. Soft and... mixed up. I love this song. Definately one of my favorites.

Gadjits, The
He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

Techno Ted

Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

The Night We Met

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
