Prison Food Lyrics
Talked and never spoke a word
She wonders who'll be the first to go
the biggest things we gotta face alone
Don't wanna waste time and go
Alone again
Alone
Alone again
And every time I turn to see it goes
Alone again
Alone
Alone again
Alone
Alone again
To pass the time, you'll float by again
And I can tell you about the little things
So you don't think about the big things for a while
Talked and never spoke a word
She wonder who will be the first to go
Alone again
Alone
Alone again
Alone
Alone again
Alone
Alone again
Alone

This song does not sound like clocks. This song, like millions of other songs out there, simply has the same accent pattern as clocks. Unfortunately since clocks got blown way out of propotion, every song from now on with that accent pattern will be dubbed as "sounding like clocks". No, if you want a song that sounds like clocks, listen to the new coldplay single, now THAT sounds like clocks.

The title doesn't really fit the song. My guess is that Ben did this on purpose. He's drawing a picture of the big things, and how you can walk forever with someone and talk about nothing but little things, and you might as well be not saying anything. "we talked and never spoke a word"...that's kinda what I surmised.
If that's true, then maybe it's like prison food. It will keep you alive, but it's nothing meaty..it's poop on a stick. Small talk is like that...it can keep people talking...but it's not meaty like the big things?
I dunno I just thought of that as I went. It could work.

wil555 took the words right out of my mouth, i completely agree. prison food is exactly what this song is about except theyre talking about life instead.
except maybe its not exactky about a girl who is depressed, its about the singer knowing the world is bad, and trying to protect, or distract the girl from this
I can tell you about the little things So you don't think about the big things for a while
possibly. dont attack me if im wrong. but it seems the sing is having a much bigger problem with feeling blue than the person he's "talking" to.
A trace of me, it floats in my periphery And every time I turn to see it goes
yeah..

In my opinion this is the only song from Songs for Silverman that would make Ben Folds greatest hits album
"A trace of me floats in my periphery/and every time I turn to see/it goes" maybe one of his greatest internal rhymes and metaphorical images ever. I think this song is about the feeling of surviving passage of time without getting answers to the "big questions" (like: who am i? why do we 'walk the earth'? 'who will be the first to go?' Am I 'Alone' again?)
After all, "the biggest things we have to face alone"

I love Ben Folds but didn't he notice that this song is just Clocks with different notes?

I disagree, I don't think it sounds like "Clocks" at all.

Great song, but I have no idea what it's song is about... I like on the DVD how Ben talks about how the background singer makes it sound like a Pink Floyd song, because that's what I thought when I first heard it, and hearing Ben say it made me feel more sane.

yeah i dont know how to grasp this song really. maybe this guy is in prison(going back to the the title) or some form of forced-seclusion, and all he can look forward to is a visit from his girl perhaps?

well i really have no idea what this song could be about - just want to say that i think wil555' thought is very interesting
... but in this context, what could all this "go"-lines mean:
She wonders who'll be the first to go
