Up Against the Wall Lyrics

Guess I should have caught your call
But I just had to waste the phone forget it all
Bones are trembling hands are cold
You don't know how it feels you've got me up against the wall

Maybe we could make this work
But now you start to leave before it's getting worse
I don't know what you came here for
It's almost that I wish we hadn't met at all

Your slap is like a wake-up call
The bruises on the face don't bother me at all
Bones are trembling hands are cold
It's almost that I wish you had me up against the wall

I think it's a story, each verse is another step in the ending of a relationship. He starts by screening her calls because, like mumbles says, it's close to the end of the relationship, then the confrontation, then the "slap just like a wake-up call" and it's over.

The music is brilliant in this song, it captures the tone perfectly, I love it.

It seems to me that it is a story of a failing relationship, but the last verse is the aftermath of ending something that you think makes you miserable. Boy starts to resent girl (for having him "up against the wall"), and the feeling becomes mutual. The two hate each other and by the end of it he misses her and thinks "It’s almost that I wish you had me up against the wall".

Almost like saying that he'd take the worst just to have her again.

I LOVE this song. I agree, I believe it's a relationship coming to a nasty end. but there's part of him that still wants to hold on with the last line saying "it's almost that I wish you had me up against the wall." I interpret that in a sexual form. An ending relationship that's too hard to let go of. Answering the phone would be too hard for him.

I think that this song is about a couple that is going through some problems. They are trying to work it out but can't because they can't stop arguing. By the end, he says something that causes his significant other to slap him resulting in him being sexually frustrated or aroused.

My Interpretation

I kinda feel like the song is about a similar situation as I am in. Where the end of a relationship is kinda visible, or was visible. Where there is no other way out but to end it even though you might not even want to. Such a great song!!

likewise surprised by the lack of comments...this song is pretty deep if you take a few minutes to really listen to it...i think it's about knowing a relationship is over long before it's over...it slowly unravels but then it just hits i.e. "your slap is like a wake-up call"...but towards the end it's as if he's blindsighted by it, even though subconsciously he knew it was coming all along...
