So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.

This song is def a twin to "Unfair" (a song she has been quoted as saying is about falling in love with someone who is already in a relationship) so it is presumably about the same person. Given the references to buying an apartment and not being able to see her love interest "after tonight," it's most likely that she's moving away and she'll "wait a day to break the bad news" (i.e. notifying him that she's leaving once she's already gone).
And, of course, the fact that she sees in him a fellow "idealist" and "dreamer" (terms commonly given to people with the INFP personality on the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)) portends that she'll always be left wondering if they would've been perfect together.

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
This song is literally about her best friend, Juliette Ashby.
and paulette and stephanie are characters on Grease 2. Steph's cool and everyone fights over and likes her, whereas paulette is try-hard and craves approval from the other characters.
I think the song is about Frenemies who used to be friends. I don't know if you've had this kind of relationship, but Frenemies are people who don't like each other, but pretend to for various reasons. Sometimes they have friends in common, so neither one wants to rock the boat by saying how much they hate each other. Sometimes, they use the other person as a punching bag to make themselves feel better. Like the person who says "Wow, you don't look as fat in those jeans as I thought you would" to make you feel bad and them feel better about their weight.
But in the song, these people had a real friendship at one point. The drugs seem to keep them together, or make it easier to tolerate each other. I think the line is "You want me to suffer just because you were born white". In England, being "Black" is a slang term for being depressed. Therefore, being white would be being happy. In "Back to Black", that was what she was saying. When her man leaves, her bright mood leaves and she goes back to her regular state of being black. That long segue was to say that, if Amy is generally black, which can be very draining for people to be around, and her friend is always white, they are going to clash. Perhaps her friend wants her to be more cheerful and she can't understand why Amy is so depressed. Amy feels like her friend shouldn't try to change her or shame her, but understand how she feels.

I've just recently started listening to Amy Winehouse. I was really surprised about this song.
It makes me think of a time a few years ago when I started hooking up with a friend a lot. It got weird when he started seeing someone, and yet we just kept being together. In the end we couldn't be friends anymore because our relationship had changed so much. Once he got serious about this girl he would not want me in his house at night. I couldn't help but think he should just dump her for me.
"I don't like that way you say my name." Interesting line. I remember not at all enjoying how he would speak to me like a friend after we'd been intimate.
DRO = HYDRO. It's a type of bud, rooted underwater.
to me this song represents a relationship between two friends, best friends, that has crumbled to fighting.
they were living together, and now one (amy) is moving out ("i cant wait to get away from you") to live with her boy friend Nicky( "Nicky's right when he says i can't win" - winning referring to the skirmishes amy and her best friend get into)
it seems they only get along when they get high together ("and it's easy to smoke it up/forget everything that happened in between")
although they are falling apart, amy still remembers how close they were, and will be ( "you know what all my faces mean......i had love for you and i was full/ and theres no one i want to smoke with more" i.e. no one she wants to get along and have a good time with, other than her best friend)
she also implies they will be friends in the future (someday ill by the rizla....) or that phrase might be a calmer, said to alleviate her feelings as well as her best friends.
im not sure about the "suffering because of being white"... any ideas?
the lyrics above contain a typo - it's not "you were born white" - the real lyric is "you were born wide" - meaning that her friend is heavier than she is (i.e., fatter)

aww this song is EXACTLY like me and my best friend :)) we ALWAYZ fight almost everyday...but we love eachother to death and will always be there for eachother. we used to get high 2gether and just laugh about all the stupid things we argued about lol.....i miss her :( we dont talk anymore now ....not too much. so this is our song i guess.. best friendz growing apart.

I'm pretty sure "dro" should mean "draw", as in you get the draw of the joint/fag. Whatever Miss Winehouse chooses to roll in her rizlas..
I'm pretty positive that when she says "dro" she's refering to hydro, which is herb grown hydroponically.<br /> or using it as a basic term to mean weed in general, I know alot of kids around here refer to weed as DRO, so that's just my opinion.
