Big Black Coffin Lyrics

it's coming back to things you've said to me
i'm hiding away from reality
denying myself for the better parts
and you slip back and say "don't take it hard"
and then i find it hard to sleep at all
wishing i could give someone else a call
someone that's closer closer close to me
forgetting someone might come over me

do you know the bar?
the way to the bar?
and it's clear and bright now
from the statements to the lights
from the big black coffin to the black under your eyes

but if life is complex
why'd we
and when i close my eyes
i still see this face looking upon me, still upon me, still

no competition over ecstacy
___ and you're confronting me
i will admit all of my weaker parts
but i'll shut up if you don't want my point
my point of view to stand against your own
perhaps you're better off on your own
but i don't need to be put down this way
i'm going down this way but you can stay

do you know the bar?
the way, to the bar?

but it's clear and bright now
from the statements to the lights
from the big black coffin
to the black under your eyes
but if life is complex
and when i close my eyes
i still see this face, looking upon me, still upon me, still

and if life becomes...never work for me
if black becomes...i don't want us to be
another opportunity wasted by
...best friend's endless pretense

and it's clear and bright now
from the statements to the lights
from the big black coffin
to the black under your eyes

*there's quite a few parts missing, sorry. hopefully someone could make out the parts that i couldn't understand.

OFFICIAL LYRICS (according to the ones that come with the cd)

It's coming back the things you said to me I'm hiding away from reality Dening myself all the better parts Then you slip back and say "Don't take it hard" And then I find it hard to sleep at all Wishing I could give someone else a call Someone that's closer, closer, close to me Forgetting someone might’ve come over me

Do you know the bar? The way to the bar? But it's clear and bright now From the statements to the lies From the big black coffin To the black under your eyes

But if life is complex Why present a fake? And when I close my eyes I still see this face Looking upon me Still upon me Still

No competition over ecstasy Find ebb and tide when you're confronting me I will admit all of my weaker parts But I'll shut up if you don't want my point My point of view to stand against your own Perhaps you're better off on your own But I don't need to be put down this way I'm going down but you can stay

Do you know the bar? The way to the bar? And it's clear and bright now From the statements to the lies From the big black coffin To the black under your eyes

But if life is complex Why present a fake? And when I close my eyes I still see this face Looking upon me Still upon me Still

And it's black because I know it'll never work for me

And it's black because I dont want us to be Another opportunity Wasted by by all of these Loose-ends, “they don’t know their own best” — friends And “Let's pretends”…

It sounds like 'Find ebb and tide and you're confronting me" at that blank spot.

Since no one has tried to decipher what this song means, I guess I will give it a shot...

This song is about the guy that was dumped by the other person. He really liked her, but she didnt like him.

"it's coming back to things you've said to me i'm hiding away from reality denying myself for the better parts and you slip back and say "don't take it hard"

He is reflecting on the past and not allowing himself to recover from the past.

I also think when the big black coffin is mentioned, it is symbolism for all things black (Things bad or bad moments from the past) will be buried, like a coffin. Forgotten, as some would say.

The "Bye Bye Bye" part at the end is stating that the guy is saying bye to all the things from the past and is moving on.

I hope some people will add to what I have said.

i think the meaning is all in the first verse. " it's coming back to things you've said to me i'm hiding away from reality denying myself for the better parts and you slip back and say "don't take it hard" and then i find it hard to sleep at all wishing i could give someone else a call someone that's closer closer close to me forgetting someone might come over me "

this female broke this fellow's heart and now he is in a depressed state. "do you know the way to the bar" -real dope song everybody can relate to at some point or another in their lives. huge pb&j fan :D

Cover art for Big Black Coffin lyrics by Peter Bjorn and John

To, me the singer is not recently broken up. I think what he is describing is a feeling that all of his relationships are doomed from the start. He wants someone to be "closer closer close to me" but he knows that "someone might come over me". Or that once he brings someone close they have the opportunity to criticize him and he finds that nobody will love him because he doesn't love himself. So this man who feels that "it will never work for me" is barhopping with a friend as the wingman. "best friend so full of pretense" describes his friend who is still fooling himself into believing that the pain of breakup is worth the pleasure of unity. So when the chorus says "it's clear and bright... from the big black coffin, to the black under your eyes" means that every time he looks a girl in the eyes he can imagine the possibility of their relationship already dead and in the coffin before he even learns her name. "life is complex so why present a thing?" words fall short. He wants to explain it to someone, have someone understand and love him anyway, but if he tried he would just sound like a fool.

These are the lyrics the way I hear them

It's coming back the things you said to me I'm hiding away from reality Denying myself all the better parts Then you slip back and say "Don't take it hard" And then I find it hard to sleep at all Wishing I could give someone else a call Someone that's closer, closer, close to me Forgetting someone might come over me

Do you know the bar? The way to the bar? But it's clear and bright now From the statements to the lies From the big black coffin To the black under your eyes

But if life is complex Why please anything? And when I close my eyes I still see this face Looking upon me Still upon me Still

No competition over ecstasy Find ebb and tide when you're confronting me I will admit all of my weaker parts But I'll shut up if you don't want my point My point of view to stand against your own Perhaps you're better off on your own But I don't need to be put down this way I'm going down this way but you can stay

Do you know the bar? The way to the bar? And it's clear and bright now From the statements to the lies From the big black coffin To the black under your eyes

But if life is complex Why please anything? And when I close my eyes I still see this face Looking upon me Still upon me Still

And it's black because I know you'll never work for me And it's black because I don't want us to be Another opportunity Wasted by by analogies Losing staples of your best friends and 'let's pretend'

And it's clear and bright now From the statements to the lies From the big black coffin To the black under your eyes... Eyes... Ooh...

I love this song, too... totally about unrequited love, but it makes it feel really fresh and original.
