God knows what is hiding in that weak and drunken heart
I guess you kissed the girls and made them cry
Those hardfaced Queens of misadventure
God knows what is hiding in those weak and sunken eyes
A Fiery throng of muted angels
Giving love and getting nothing back
People help the people
And if your homesick, give me your hand and I'll hold it
People help the people
And nothing will drag you down
Oh and if I had a brain, Oh and if I had a brain
I'd be cold as a stone and rich as the fool
That turned, all those good hearts away
God knows what is hiding, in that world of little consequence
Behind the tears, inside the lies
A thousand slowly dying sunsets
God knows what is hiding in those weak and drunken hearts
I guess the loneliness came knocking
No on needs to be alone, oh save me
People help the people
And if your homesick, give me your hand and I'll hold it
People help the people
Nothing will drag you down
Oh and if I had a brain, Oh and if I had a brain
I'd be cold as a stone and rich as the fool
That turned, all those good hearts away
People help the people
And if your homesick, give me your hand and I'll hold it
People help the people
Nothing will drag you down
Oh and if I had a brain, Oh and if I had a brain
I'd be cold as a stone and rich as the fool
That turned, all those good hearts away

I don't think this song is too long. The meaning is pretty straightforward in my opinion: show kindness to your fellow man. I like the simplicity of the lyrics. My favorite lines are:
"Oh and if I had a brain I'd be cold as a stone and rich as the fool That turned all those good hearts away."
Really sums up the whole idea of the song: That people just worry about getting ahead & they don't see the value or point in being a good person. I don't care how successful you are, although I know that is the focus in our cutthroat society. You may be a successful CEO/estate agent/salesman, but at the end of the day, if you're not a good human being, you aren't a successful PERSON in the true sense of the word.
(Oh, and not to be a grammar nazi, but there shouldn't be a comma after 'turned.' FYI.)
Mmm you have a point, although in the context of lyrics the comma helps to show the rhythm of the words :) Oh I am too too cool.
Grammar is what this song means to me it would seem... Love this song, it doesn't seem too long, or at least not on the radio edit...although the meaning of the lyrics doesn't really sink in when you don't have the words to read.
apologies for the bad grammar, whether you agree with it or not. i would edit it, but, alas, i cannot.
how i love this song. ever so often you come upon a song that truly SPEAKS through its lyrics. "people help the people" is one of them. i think it appeals to the lonely, lost soul in us all... we pretend we're so much better than the people surrounding us when deep down inside we're just a collective of the same emotions, lives and silent thoughts... just residing in separate bodies. even though the thought sounds terribly depressing - i think the song also speaks about how every person you meet is shadowing a haunting secret, life experience etc. behind their smile and everyday routines. although some of us have had far fortunate lives than others, even the most well-off have had trying times. we're all waiting to be saved. if only it was as simple as holding a hand and showing sympathy towards your fellow being... the world would be a much happier place. for a split second, we could pretend we weren't so excluded and alienated from the very beings that live the same lives, breath the same air and cry the same tears.
I love these lyrics! It reminds me of my situation. For years I was an alcoholic and unfortunately you don't feel valued because of your weaknesses.... but I was only drinking to forget the pain I had inside from past abusive relationships. I once met someone who for me represented God, not just someone who said they were Christians (they're plenty of them)! Through this person, I felt of God's real love for me, and that he understood what I was going through and why I was drinking... if that makes sense? Anyway, this song means a lot to me.
i don't think it is boring at all this is an amazing song and i can't stop listening to it the lyrics are beautiful best song i've heard for a long time haha i sound a bit sad don't i it's true though well in my opinion anyway i'm not one to be biased and all that
I think people have got the meaning pretty sussed, so I'm just going to say I adore this song and leave it at that. :)
This is a lovely song, it moved me to tears when I was very brokehearted. I think it's about how people sleep around and break hearts. Other people's hearts and their own hearts and everyone hides how much they hurt and miss each other.
This is one of my favourite songs, and it makes me sad that Birdy gets most of the credit for it when the original by Cherry Ghost is so incredible. The second verse is breath-taking as it is so accurate, "In this world of little consequence". These days it is rare for people to think about what they are doing, and the impact their actions will have on our generation and generations to come (like global warming, for instance). They don't think their (often selfish) choices will affect anyone but themselves- but they are wrong as it is like a drop of water causing ripples in a lake.
Now, the most powerful line for me is "A thousand slowly dying sunsets" because it perfectly sums up the human race. Pretend our lives are a day, when we are born we are live a sunrise- young, beautiful and full of potential. As the sun climbs, we grow up and mature. When it reaches midday, we are adults at our happiest and in our "hay day" so to speak. Then as the sun slowly begins to descend, we grow older and wiser. Finally, as the sun sets we are at death's doors, so we can at last show our true colours and how much we fulfilled our true potential.
Anyway, it's a stunning song with a lovely meaning.
i'm the first yay!! this song is great, but it could be shorter. it is sad for a while, but then it just gets boring. however, i still like it.
