Valerie (The Zutons cover) Lyrics
And I look across the water
And I think of all the things, what you're doing
And in my head I paint a picture
Well my body's been a mess
And I've missed your ginger hair
And the way you like to dress
Won't you come on over
Stop making a fool out of me
Why don't you come on over Valerie?
Valerie
Valerie
Put your house up for sale, did you get a good lawyer?
I hope you didn't catch a ten,
I hope you'll find the right man who'll fix it for ya
And are you shopping anywhere,
Changed the color of your hair, are you busy?
And did you have to pay that fine
You were dodging all the time, are you still dizzy?
Well my body's been a mess
And I've missed your ginger hair
And the way you like to dress
Won't you come on over
Stop making a fool out of me
Why don't you come on over Valerie?
Valerie
Valerie
And I look across the water
And I think of all the things, what you're doing
And in my head I paint a picture
Well my body's been a mess
And I've missed your ginger hair
And the way you like to dress
Won't you come on over
Stop making a fool out of me
Why don't you come on over Valerie?
Valerie
Valerie
Valerie
Valerie
Valerie
Valerie
Valerie
This song was originally written and sung by a man, about an ex girlfriend named Valerie, who went away, possibly to jail. Now she's come back, but he hasn't seen her. He desperately wants to meet up with her, and he's been wondering what she's been doing all this time.
why jail?
why jail?
IDK why jail but maybe Valerie had a rough past but he still loved her

this was not written by Amy Winehouse, this was written by the zutons and it's about a girl the leadsinger met while touring in America and how he misses her beside all this crazy things she do.
I thing Amy's version is better, anyway.
Zutons cover--yes, yes, we know, but the more important point is what happens to the song and to the audience when Amy W. sings it. This is a woman who is singing about the yearning and need of her old lover (who just happens to be another woman, think crimson and clover sung by joan jett and the blackhearts). The passion and desperation in her voice when singing this song is so convincing and palpable that you can feel her heart bleeding when she pushes out, "come on over, stop making a fool out of me..." and I love to think that she would feel like a fool if valerie doesn't come over...because if she doesn't she's been a fool to be in this kind of pain and torture for so long while they have been apart. She's just come back to her old town and she wants her life to go back to how it was, which will only be the same when Valerie re-appears and stops playin like she has this complicated life and another man to find and "fix it". I love this song sung by Amy W. It is rare that I like a remake more than the original--but she didn't just stand up and sing it, she owns it and now, I believe its hers.
I agree completely.
I agree completely.
WoW I couldn't agree any more...... I love how you touched on the fact that Yes it's a Zutons cover but what was Amy W.'s point in remaking it? and why couldn't she change the name to Victor or some other catchy mans name? And yes "she owned it"..... This song for some reason has always made me so happy when I'm NOT listening (consciously) to the words but more so the beat, I just dance.

So true. I believe it's hers now too.

Actually, I think you'll find that the line is:
"And I miss your ginger hair"
She's really made the song her own. It was a good song anyway, but Amy really added something to it.
I love this song. It's gorgeous. I love Amy's 50's 60's sound. And yeah totally agree with Anna's comment Amy is a complete mess but she her songs and music is just beautiful.
This song was written by The Zutons. About an old girlfriend of course.
My guess is it's about travelling somewhere, falling in love and coming back home :) or just a person you haven't seen in a long time :P but she's definetely infatuated by him/her... much ala Dido's "Sand in My Shoes", although that was a little more sad.
This could perfectly be a song about Valerie Solanas...
why won't you come on over amy??
