Humanity, auf wiedersehen
It's time to say goodbye, the party's over
As the laughter dies, an angel cries
Humanity, it's au revoir to your insanity
You sold your soul to feed your vanity
Your fantasies and lies

You're a drop in the rain
Just a number, not a name
And you don't see it
You don't believe it
At the end of the day
You're a needle in the hay
You signed and sealed it
And now you gotta deal with it
Humanity, humanity
Goodbye
Goodbye

Be on your way, adios amigo
There's a price to pay
For all the egotistic games you played
The world you made is gone

You're a drop in the rain
Just a number, not a name
And you don't see it
You don't believe it
At the end of the day
You're a needle in the hay
You signed and sealed it
And now you gotta deal with it
Humanity, humanity
Goodbye
Goodbye

Run and hide, there's fire in the sky
Stay inside
The water's gonna rise and pull you under
In your eyes, I'm staring at the end of time
Nothing can change us
No one can save us from ourselves

You're a drop in the rain
Just a number, not a name
And you don't see it
You don't believe it
At the end of the day
You're a needle in the hay
You signed and sealed it
And now you gotta deal with it
Humanity, humanity, humanity
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye

It's time

IMHO this song is a master piece for Scorpions band. The first time I've listened to this song I immagined a scenes in our world starting from the 19th century, wars and so and the surprising thing that when I searched for a video of this song, I just found what I immagined, here it is youtube.com/watch , notice the marsh music at the begining of the song which is a very intelligent trick toi make your mind visualize the idea they want to send, and in the video u will see that they stand on a small piece of earth - I think it is the remaining part of it after the destruction - and surrounding them you will see shows about wars, kills, poor people from Africa amd so, it is a real representation of what the world is seeing these days which is terrible :(

My concept on this song is that it is based on the egotism of humanity. And how sadly some individuals are self-centered and believe that the world revolves around them, when it is far from the truth. Since as the song states "You're a drop in the rain, just a number not a name." But their failure to change, is what causes suffering to our society. And also, their inability to perceive their vanity is the greatest issue, since if they would be aware of it humanity would not suffer from their egotism.

I've viewed this one as being about humanity as a whole, as it bookends the album nicely with Hour 1, and is a good summation of the record's themes of government, organized religion, and even love failing in the face of ego and refusing to acknowledge reality.

Its obvisiuously about change and how insignificant you can be, becuase even when you think you've changed you haven't, so you lose your humanity by not being able to control who you are

It is about humanity. Or the lack there of.

You could see this as being about every individual's fate when facing mortality, but it could also be about humanity as a whole.

Auf wiedersehen can be translated as "until we meet again", which I'm not sure if it's just used as a variant of "goodbye" or if it implies that it really is about individual(s) and the afterlife.

Another way to look at it is that it isn't about mortality, but saying goodbye to "humanity", i.e. morality. That runs more in line with the video, but videos don't necessarily mean the same thing as the lyrics. In this sense, it could be condemning people in general for their lack of attention towards the suffering in the world, paying more time and attention to things that are ultimately inconsequential. Oh...

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

Techno Ted

Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

Holiday

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
