Well, in my opinion this song is about being a young & maybe a little naive &/or introverted girl and finding yourself loving a man who is at first very charming, carefree & outgoing, and seems at first to be without limits, as in
"There was a time
you opened up every doorway
you didn't mind if everything
wasn't your way"
then that man starts to gradually become more introverted & shows their more possessive/obsessive side to you as the relationship progresses, even while they keep up the appearance of being carefree & outgoing to everyone else,
"Don't pull away
that goes against what you told me
I look in your eyes
I realize what you've sold me
is love in a vacuum"
so you confront them about the way they're acting and of course they deny it,
"I think you've changed
but you insist that
that's not true"
quite possibly they are an addict of some sort, my guess would be cocaine, &/or showing very obsessive behavior towards you (early on in the video for this song we see the man hanging a picture up, it is a very large portrait of Aimee & it is prominently displayed in his/their apartment for the duration of the song), thus their "love in a vacuum",
"You look so strange, so distant
that you're hardly you
Now I can see
how you have been acting different
You say it's me
but I know
that it isn't
it's love in a vacuum"
but still you are in love with them and don't want to leave them and you know that they are truly in love with you and they don't want you to leave them either, maybe they are convinced you can save them from themself, maybe they are so broken that the possibility of an overdose &/or suicide attempt is very real and you want to get through to them that their behavior not only dangerous but it is also just pissing you off and if they don't wise up they run the risk of loosing you, as in the lines
"You will be lonely
if you leave me alone", so you want to save them but can't get through to them due to the addiction &/or emotional problems they have,
"Love in a vacuum
and that's not enough
love in a vacuum
You will be lonely
you'll be the only one who feels this way
You will be lonely
if you leave me alone
You will be lonely
you'll be the only one who feels this way
it's just not enough"
you want them to understand that the love they are giving you is not enough when it is filtered through the vacuum of their drug addiction &/or emotional impairment,
"You will be lonely
you'll be the only one who feels this way
it's just not enough
and just wait
you will be lonely
Love in a vacuum
Love in a vacuum
and that's not enough
Love in a vacuum".
'Love In A Vacuum' for me is a hauntingly truthful acute argument on the loneliness of obsession and almost inevitable loss of love that follows people who are broken in some way or another; the obsessives, the coke heads, the drunks, addicts or the just-plain-old emotionally broken; a razor sharp, lyrically driven, deceptively poppy, yet ultimately-depressing-in-the-best-way song.
Quintessential Aimee Mann.
So what the fuck is this UK
Gunnin' with this US of A
In Iraq and Iran and in Afghanistan
Does not a day go by
Without the Israeli Air Force
Fail to drop its bombs from the sky?
How many mothers to cry?
How many sons have to die?
How many missions left to fly over Palestine?
Cause as a matter of facts
It's a pact, it's an act
These are illegal attacks
So bring the soldiers back
These are illegal attacks
It's contracts for contacts
I'm singing concrete facts
So bring the soldiers back
What mean that you beat my people
What mean that you beat my people
And grind the faces of the poor
So tell me just how come were the Taliban
Sat burning incense in Texas
Roaming round in a Lexus
Sittin' on six billion oil drums
Down with the Dow Jones, up on the Nasdaq
Pushed into the war zones
It's a commercial crusade
Cause all the oil men get paid
And only so many soldiers come home
It's a commando crusade
A military charade
And only so many soldiers come home
Soldiers, soldiers come home
Soldiers come home
Through all the blood and sweat
Nobody can forget
It ain't the size of the dog in the fight
It's the size of the fight in the dog on the day or the night
There's no time to reflect
On the threat, the situation, the bark nor the bite
These are commercial crusades
'Cos all the oil men get paid
These are commando crusades
Commando tactical rape
And from the streets of New York and Baghdad to Tehran and Tel Aviv
Bring forth the prophets of the Lord
From dirty bastards fillin' pockets
With the profits of greed
These are commercial crusades
Commando tactical raids
Playin' military charades to get paid
And who got the devils?
And who got the Lords?
Build yourself a mountain - Drink up in the fountain
Soldiers come home
Soldiers come home
Soldiers come home
Soldiers come home
What mean ya that you beat my people
What mean ya that you beat my people
And grind the faces of the poor.

Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Bravo Ian Brown. It's good to have a singer who stands up against war and injustice. And it's good that Ian Brown is brave enough to speak the truth about Israel. It's like the singers who spoke out against Apartheid. Or the people who stood up against the Holocaust. Singers and other in society should speak up against global injustices! Ian Brown is not ignorant about it, he is enlightened.
@Varooom My up vote is for your reply to Shiraz. There is no option to up vote people's replies. Well said.
Good lyrics. About time someone with a voice said something critical of Israel.
Still genious!!
Maybe some of the finer points in the lyrics are incorrect but the msg is surely clear??
Genius lyrics from a genius.
This song is soo powerful. Really amazing. The meanings pretty clear. Its so truthful aswell just wowww.
this song is good, perfect harmony between song, songwriter and singer/s, must state though it wasn't the taliban of Afghanistan burning incense in texas, raoming around... it was the Bin Ladens. Bit lost on that verse, it puzzles me.
Abermike, Whilst you start off an argument you fail to tell us why hes peddling lies, gossip, rumour and propaganda.
Shit man, i can admit he cant sing. why? cos i heard the motherfucker with my own ears but he can write to provoke. Insult us further by telling us your American and propwely insulting us with your 'war' comments.
I'm a big fan of Ian Brown, but this is like bad 6th form poetry. He can do way way better than this.
Abermike, I agree he's jumping on the bandwaggon, though I'd like to believe those are views that he holds too. I'm not sure about the lies, gossip and rumour though.
I should point out — I am anti-war.
As for the song, the meaning is fairly clear… in fact I doubt it could be any less subtle without the lyric "war war go away" or something. Such a lyric probably wouldn't be out of place amongst this dire collection of cliché and primary school rhyming.
I'm a huge fan of the Roses and I quite like Ian Brown's solo stuff as a whole, but it seems these days his "God like genius" may have abandoned him. I just hope the rest of the new album is better than this pile of bollocks.
Just my opinion on the matter anyway.
Xias is right. I love Ian. The man is literally a genius in the true sense of the word, but that is what makes these lyrics a touch disappointing. Hey it's his music , it's his world but......These lyrics leave me hoping he just rushed the lyrics and focused on teh music......
Course i wouldn't know because they have released the damn thing in the States!!!! Anyone know when that might happen?
Does ian and his record company WANT me to steal it off the net?
