Death by Chocolate Lyrics

Death by chocolate is myth
This I know because I lived
I’ve been around for broken hearts and how
Lay your head in my hands little girl
This is only right now

Death by crying doesn’t exist, though
The headaches feel a bit like it
You might explode
But you reach the end of the road
And you, little tree
I’m certain you will grow

Tears on your pillow will dry and you will learn
Just how to love again
Oh my weeping willow
Let your leaves fall and return
Oh darling the seasons are your friend

Death by anger this is true
Just let him go he can’t hurt you
Oh little girl this is such a cruel cruel world
This is the first, of a million broken hearts

Tears on your pillow will dry and you will learn
Just how to love again
Oh my weeping willow
Let your leaves fall and return
Oh darling the seasons are your friend

Oh it wont be long you will grow strong
Up up and away

He’s but a falling leaf, he’s but a falling leaf, he’s but a falling leaf

This song is pretty self-explanatory: This is just now. You will get past the devastation of heartbreak, but you have to go through it first. There's no way of escaping it. But it's not as bad as you think. It won't kill you. Eventually, it will become easier because heartbreak is like the seasons: it happens regularly ("This is the first of a million broken hearts.") But you have to let go of the anger and just see that the subject of your heartbreak is just a falling leaf, an insignificant part of a greater cycle. Sweet song, like what a mother says to her daughter or a girl to her friend.

The meaning of this song is pretty self-explanatory like susiestentor said, this is basically all the things a mother or friend would say to help someone overcome a heartbreak. And I have to agree with Thandiwandi Sia has a very unique and beautiful voice.

What a beautiful, positive song about heartbreak and finding the strength to realise you will get over it even if it's consuming you at the moment. "He's but a falling leaf" - so true.

I love this song! I've been looking for a job and turned to the only people I thought would help me out and was turned away. I felt so betrayed and listening to this song really helped me move on.

Here is my interpretation:

The short: In life, people betray you and break your heart. It won't kill you.

The long: I think of this song as Sia telling her younger innocent self (or another person) who has just gone through her first major breakup that this is a part of life and she will survive it as Sia did "Death by Chocolate is a myth, This I know because I've lived"

I think of "Death by Chocolate is a myth" as a playful way of saying... eat your feelings! Lol Chocolate helps to heal a broken heart and it wont kill you.

Sia goes on to say "Death by crying doesn't exist" Crying your eyes out is a part of healing and that things will get better. It feels like you might explode is a way of addressing how young girls will dramatize something as devastating as a breakup (or whatever it is... for me, it was losing out on a job and feeling betrayed by people who i felt always had my back)

The chorus: "Tears on your pillow will dry and you will learn Just how to love again Oh my weeping willow Let your leaves fall and return Oh darling the seasons are your friend"

I believe here she's saying you will survive this. The world continues spinning, seasons go by and then likens the girl to a weeping willow that endures the seasons but is still standing at the end of them. The seasons help you to grow and thus "are your friends"

The next verse: Death by anger this is true...

Is her saying don't let the anger consume you. First is sadness and then anger kicks in and it can be a dangerous thing.

To answer your question eternalsunshine11, "he's but a falling leaf" alludes to how a tree though the many seasons will grow and shed leaves and he's just an insignificant part of that process. In all the she will endure and go through... he's just one single falling leaf.

LOVE this song.

I love how this song ends.

"He's but a falling leaf, he's but a falling leaf, he's but a falling leaf"

This guy/girl/obession is just a small thing in the grand picture. Great message

My Interpretation

It's actually a cute song. It reminds me of my teen-ager years, when break-ups were the end of the world. Looking back on it now, i'm really happy i didn't end up with one of those guys. Death by chocolate: yeah, the only thing helping in those moments is eating chocolate till your stomach feels worse than your heart does ;) distracts you.
