Hello world
Hope you're listening
Forgive me if I'm young
For speaking out of turn
There's someone I've been missing
I think that they could be
The better half of me
They're in the in the wrong place trying to make it right
But I'm tired of justifying
So I say to you

Come home
Come home
'Cause I've been waiting for you
For so long
For so long
And right now there's a war between the vanities
But all I see is you and me
The fight for you is all I've ever known
So come home
Oooh

I get lost in the beauty
Of everything I see
The world ain't as half as bad
As they paint it to be
If all the sons
If all the daughters
Stopped to take it in
Well hopefully the hate subsides and the love can begin
It might start now yeah
Well maybe I'm just dreaming out loud
Until then

Come home
Come home
'Cause I've been waiting for you
For so long
For so long
And right now there's a war between the vanities
But all I see is you and me
The fight for you is all I've ever known
So come home
Oooh

Everything I can't be
Is everything you should be
And that's why I need you here
Everything I can't be
Is everything you should be
And that's why I need you here
So hear this now

Come home
Come home
'Cause I've been waiting for you
For so long
For so long
And right now there's a war between the vanities
But all I see is you and me
The fight for you is all I've ever known
So come home
Oooh

I was at a small cafe concert of One Republic's. Right before they played this song, Ryan Tedder told a little story. One of his best friends had just proposed to his girlfriend, whom he had been dating for years. Right after the man proposed, he found out he was being deployed to Iraq. Tedder wrote this song for them. I loved this song then and I love it even more now, as my boyfriend is currently serving in Iraq. The fight for him is all I've ever known, while his world and his fight is much bigger... Come home

I went to their concert and when they played this song they said that there's many songs out there from the perspective of the person who's gone away but nothing for the person that's left behind and so that's what they wanted to show.

    Song Meaning

The song actually is about on of 1Republic's loved one going off to war in Iraq. I have time warner cable and there's a channel called HDNet which is always playing concerts of some sort. And I being the uber lucky person I am, found one of 1Republic's concerts and watched it over and over again. Ryan Tedder (lead singer) sat at his piano and explained to the crowded that they had many loved one over in Iraq. He said he didn't care about any of the repercussions anymore because our troops have been gone for so long that they just think they should all "come home". (: Hope that cleared somethings up.

Personally...I feel the song is almost reffering to a homosexual relationships.

"Forgive me if I am young, speaking out of turn" --The younger generation is becoming more accepting, while the older generations has not.

"I think that they could be The better half of me They're in their own place trying to make it right But I'm tired of justifying" --His love, he wants to be with them. But because of the strains homosexuals can feel by not being accepted, his love is out trying to be 'normal' but he's tired of trying to justify his feelings.

"And right now there's a war between the vanities But all I see is you and me The fight for you is all I've ever known"--Homosexuals don't choose to be that way, the fight for his love is one he's only ever known. He doesn't know how to be different and the vanities of the world is what is keeping them apart.

This is just what the songs reads to me, rather it is correct or not.

this is one of the sweetest/saddest songs on here. I love that first verse too... :D

but I think it might be talking about a loved one who's gone to war, and they're asking them to "Come Home"....

"the fight for you is all i've ever known," they're saying that's the only war that matters to them

"everything I cant be is everything you should be" is asking them to be brave, cuz the singer cant be.....

and just all the references to love and hate and war and peace.... its awesomeness

Ryan Tedder said the song is about the people left back home when a loved one goes to war. He specifically wrote the song from the perspective of his good friend's brand new fiancée, who is hoping to God that her husband-to-be will come back home.

Whoa!First I thought this song is about wanting a girl back, then I thought maybe there's another meaning about wanting to be a better person, cause one has fallen apart or got lost. "There's someone I've been missing I think that they could be The better half of me" So I just feel it that way. And now I know the ultimate meaning dedicating to those at war, what a song! No wonder there's such a complicated sadness in the song. The song has three-layer meaning to me now. Definitely will love it till the end. I can't help loving songs about war and peace with beautiful melodies.

i love the beg. of this song "There’s someone I’ve been missing I think that they could be The better half of me They’re in their own place trying to make it right" it has all the perfect words that you wish you could come up with but cant. its about a break up, or a relationship that has faded and one person is trying to be ok by themselves, but one person wants the other one back, hence the "come home come home ive been waiting for ou for so long" Also i think that the two people have hurt each other so badly that its hard for them to be together "Well hopefully the hate subsides and the love can begin" but they recognize that they have hurt each other and want to get past that because they are still in love "And right now there's a war between the vanities But all I see is you and me The fight for you is all I’ve ever known" I think that the vanities could possibly be the people themselves, like how they are being stubborn and have too much pride to suck it up and be together. It's such a great song and i really can connect to it, kinda sad but it gives people hope.

i think these lyrics posted are incorrect. the line "i'm tired of adjusting fights" should be "and i'm tired of justifying, so i say to you.."

that being said, this song takes on a completely different meaning. for me.

hello world, i hope you're listening forgive me if i'm young or speaking out of turn there's someone i've been missing and i think that they could be the better half of me they're in the wrong place, trying to make it right and i'm tired of justifying, so i say to you..

this verse to me is someone who is speaking to the world. there is something going on in the world that is bigger than their love, which i believe is war. the person is apologizing for being young and ignorant to what is going on in the world by making this plea to the world. they feel they may be speaking out of turn to the world, because there are so many people "singing the same song," in a sense they are addressing the world to give them back the one who is "the better half of me." but the person addressing the world is tired of justifying the war and what their loved one if over "in the wrong place" fighting for.

come home, come home i've been waiting for you for so long, for so long right now there's a war between the vanities but all i see is you and me but the fight for you is all i've ever known so come home

here they are begging the world to bring home their better half. they have been waiting for so long for this person to come into their lives, and then the world just up and took them out of their lives. "the war between the vanities" is quite literally the war going on about material things (vanities meaning things that have no real value, as opposed to love or peace). despite this war, the person speaking to the world will fight for the one they love no matter what happens.

i get lost in the beauty of everything i see the world ain't half as bad, as they paint it to be if all the sons, all the daughters stop to take it in well hopefully the hate subsides and the love can begin it might start now, but maybe i'm just dreaming out loud

this is the most poignant verse of the entire song. here the person speaking to the world is begging for the world to realize just how much beauty there is in the world. they are telling the world to just stop, and take a look around and realize that we are all one, hoping that the hate can subside. when he says "it might start now, but maybe i'm just dreaming out loud" indicates his ignorance once again. the ignorance of someone who is young and has not experienced the hatred and ugliness of the world allows for them to still believe in beauty and love.

onerepublic, you've done it again. brilliant.

Whoa. I just heard this song on the last Gossip Girl episode and was like...damn this is familiar...it's OneRepublic! GG has good taste.

I think the song is an anthem for all the young people struggling to establish themselves and their beliefs in a chaotic world that doesn't take idealism seriously. The singer is beseeching them all to "come home", because home is where they belong, not the corrupted battlefield, where they should be growing and living with the people who love them.
